So which great fighters had 30 or less amateur fights? I know Qawi had none. Pretty sure Ron Lyle and Bernard Hopkins had none too. Maybe it's just boxers who started boxing after prison.

Ignoring early 20th century fighters for obvious reasons:

    Roberto Duran
    Julio Cesar Chavez
    Salvador Sanchez
George Foreman (despite the gold medal)
    Mike Tyson

James Toney had a very short amateur career. Only 35 fights which is not that much considering how incredibly skilled he was.

Joichiro Tatsuyoshi. He only had 19 amateur bouts in the space of around 18 months. He then proceeded to win the WBC bantam title within 8 bouts. A super talent who was harshly brought along by Osaka Teiken gym - to the cost of his later career.

I don't think that Genaro Hernandez had many amateur fights.

Qawi and Briedis started boxing at 25 so I can’t imagine they had many amateur fights. I remember hearing that Briedis won a national title in Latvia but I don’t think I’ve heard of Qawi having any amateur background

It was very common in the 30s and earlier.

I mean, if you consider Bonecrusher Smith a good fighter it's definitely him.

Rafael Espinoza might be the best current fighter to appear out of nowhere, beating Robeisy Ramirez of all people.
