Which fighters had garish records at first glance but were actually very good?

I consider Ezzard Charles the 5th greatest p4p fighter of all time. You'd be surprised at that if all you knew was his 95-25-1 paper record.

BJW's 96-31-27 record yields no insight into the p4p phenomenon he was during his peak, either.

Battling Battalino finished his career w/ a 57-26-3 mark, but his resume is impressive enough for him to be in the all-time FW top 10 IMO.

    Other examples:
    Freddie Pendleton - 47-26-5
    Lew Jenkins - 74-41-5
    Freddie "Red" Cochrane - 69-36-8

Without actually checking, I would surmise that Jenkins has the worst numerical record of anyone in the HoF - Zivic has 25 more losses, but more than twice the number of wins.

Here are a few guys worth mentioning. And yes, I did check:

Teddy 'Red Top' Davis - 71-75-6 and beat Paddy DeMarco, Charley Riley, George Araujo, Percy Bassett and Tommy Collins. Also went 15 with Saddler for the title.

Angel Robinson Garcia - 138-80-21 and beat Bunny Grant, Alfredo Urbina, Jose Stable, Rafiu King and Paul Armstead.

Tommy Tibbs - 60-77-4 and beat Willie Pep, Lauro Salas, Harold Gomes, Paul Armstead and Johnny Bizarro.

Ralph Tiger Jones - 52-32-5 and beat Sugar Ray Robinson, Kid Gavilan, Joey Giardello, Johnny Bratton and Bobby Dykes

Although I wouldn't put him in the category with a lot of the fighters already mentioned but he was a world champion. Francisco Quiroz finished his career with an 11-15-1 record.

    Saoul Mamby ended up 45-34-6

    Braddock or Lee Savold.

With the guys with aggressively long careers its hard to keep track of how bad x losses is.
