Most fasted handed counter punchers qualify, especially if they had a good hook.

Having your back to the ropes only seems to work for defensive minded guys that take a good punch. In boxing, one of the first things they teach you is not to have your back on the ropes.

Absolutely, in his prime he was the best I have ever seen on the ropes. He was amazing doing this in his fight with Palomino.

Actually, IMHO, Locche is the primary answer here, and virtually everyone else "deserves a mention"...

Joe Louis , always avenged defeats .

Wlad Klitschko never lost twice in a row to same opponent, even in his AJ loss he really turned up.

Larry Holmes, should have won the second fight with Spinks another guy hard to derail, he almost beat McCall to late in career.

Top 3 off my head that brought out the best when pressure is on when a win was needed after a loss

    Worthy mentions.

    Ali needing Frazier wins.

Foreman taking a pounding by Moorer but Won after a Morrison loss.

Maybe this is backs against the wall and not ropes ? :starwars-smiley:

I believe John Thomas mentioned him earlier in this thread but for me the poster boy is Victor Galindez although everyone came up with superb choices.

Check him out fighting off the ropes against Carlos Palomino. He overwhelms Carlos to the point that he decides to back off and try to take it back to the center of the ring.

Benitez, mentioned earlier, look at his fight with Hearns ... Thomas mostly refuses to engage him whenever Wilfred sets up along the ropes and just waits in the center of the ring and waves him out there. Clearly Manny Steward said to avoid that period.

He was best at ducking under the ropes. Which cost him the heavyweight title.

Benitez and Toney. Sometimes guys even Hearns would go to the ropes to get away from the power in the center of the ring since they can concentrate more lying back and tucking their arms in and countering. Toney is incredible at this. Hopkins is not bad. There is a concentration they can have on the ropes which they don't seem to have in the center ring.

Camacho got destroyed on the ropes v Chavez and who the hell did Lewis do well against while pressed into the ropes?

Hopkins was hard for Calzaghe to hit while he was on the ropes, Hearns did better when his back was on the ropes v Hagler than he did in his rematch v Barkley, I don`t know too many middles that could go toe to toe with Marvin having their backs on the ropes like Tommy did at times v Hagler despite being eventually stopped, that was impressive.

    Toney, Mayweather, Benavitez

Ray Leonard showed some nice work on the ropes against Hagler
