Frazier is my favorite all time fighter but I don’t know why Ali vs Frazier always comes up in threads like these when it’s more than clear Ali was not at his best.

A fighter simply cannot be out of the ring for three years then regain all he lost in less than 5 months.

Although Joe Frazier retained his title fair and square on March 8 1971, Muhammad Ali was banned for 43 months, he had two comeback fights against Quarry and Bonavena, but that is still a total of 18 rounds since 1967, the year his banishment began. And not Frazier's fault, but then Ali should have taken another fight prior to their meeting.

This is a great question. Among fighters at the top level it is really difficult to find these match ups.. This is so, partly because timing is difficult but also because people disagree widely on when a fighter's prime was or what their best weight was.

I offer Carlos Zarate-Alfonso Zamora at bantamweight and Michael Spinks-Dwight Muhammad Qawi at light heavyweight as two fights that qualify.

I thought a reason Ali wanted to take that Frazier fight was because he risked imprisonment before a verdict was going to be made for him in the coming months.

That was the closest you were gonna get to the two at their best realistically.

How many more fights did he need? He went 18 rounds against world class opponents in 150 days. And he was working out and sparring all during that layoff. It is common knowledge, at least in Los Angeles, that he drove around with his gear and a heavy bag in the trunk of his car and would get work wherever he could.
