Best five wins from the best contenders

I don't understand. I did do one on Obie Walker if you look through my old posts. If this is a joke which went over my head, I apologize. I am trying to do guys who are not that well known or top of the line to keep the thread active between the major contenders.

I was surprised there wasn't more love for Tuffy Griffiths and Johnny Risko. Griffiths held a #3 ranking at the end of the year and then beat King Levinsky just before his loss to Loughran. I thought that was an awesome win for Tommy. Likewise against Risko, Johnny was coming off probably the best streak of his career, beating Tom Heeney, King levinsky, Max Baer, Tony Galento and KO Christner before losing to Tommy. Oh, well, it is what it is.

Why Hall? Hall rose as high as the #3 contender in the NBA light-heavyweight ratings in 1949. He outpointed Archie Moore in 1948, beat Bert Lytell twice when he was #1 middle contender and moving up to light-heavy, KO'd Bob Satterfield, and drew with Holman Williams. He went into a bit of a slump but only against top men, before rallying to draw with Jimmy Slade and beat Lloyd Gibson before losing to Layne. He then won 9 of his next 10 with the only loss to Harold Johnson and with victories over John Holman and Rusty Payne.

I pick Hall as edging out Cesar Brion, a very solid second-tier type, and Bob Dunlap, who was #4 in The Ring yearly rankings in 1952. Others-Dave Whitfield, Joe Kahut, Willie Bean, Bob Garner, Lloyd Gibson

Layne is a very strong candidate for our final top ten top five list. I think he edges Elmer Ray.

 

I don't know, the Ezzard Charles 'win' always casts a pall over Layne's best wins for me. I suppose I should take it as a win is a win, but there never seems to be anything positive on that one.

 

klompton2 has posted that he has seen the film of the fight and thinks Layne won. Besides Dempsey, Jack Hurley had Layne winning, and Nat Fleischer had it 5-5.

I would like to see that film. Over the years there have been many "terrible" decisions, like Gavilan-Graham or Maxim-Patterson, which turn out to be quite reasonable to me when I watch the film.

 

Sorry, I was referring to the decision, which was very controversial. It seemed all media quarters favored Ezz in that one.

Buddy has an imposing stat and KO record, but his top five is only okay. No threat I think for our final list. His depth is also ordinary.
