Both of these guys impressed me when I didn’t think they would

    Tami Mauriello
    1 Lee Oma
    2 Lou Nova
    3 Lee Savold
    4 Bruce Woodcock (was undefeated)
    5 Gunnar Barlund

    Earnie Schaff
    1 Max Baer
    2 Tommy Loughran
    3 James Braddock
    4 Young Stribling
    5 Johnny Risko

on deck you have Tony Galento...really solid top five. Def a candidate for top ten imo.

Gazelle, it wasn't through neglect I left out Loughran, I assure you. But i am trying to adhere to a heavyweight only. I did include Rosenbloom in my list but that was because he was then engaging heavies full time (despite still holding 175 honors). So its a fine line and just a criteria I;m trying to hold to. Looking forward to tackling Mauriello and Schaaf.

    Tami Mauriello

    1----Lee Savold
    2----Lee Oma
    3----Lou Nova
    4----Bruce Woodcock
    5----Red Burman

Others--Gunnar Barlund, Buddy Knox, Tony Musto, Freddie Schott

Underwhelming for me. His best efforts may have been his close losses to Bivins, and Lesnevich in their first fight, and the draw with Pastor. All this while he was a teenager. He was an outstanding prodigy. But he quickly leveled off (and put on weight so had to fight at heavyweight) and seemed to regress. His losses to the aging Lesnevich, who had laid off for 4 years during WW2, in 1947 were more decisive than his prewar losses, although Mauriello was only 24 and Gus now 31.

I put Savold at the top because he KO'd Nova and Woodcock and I think was slightly better than Oma.

I think a good but not outstanding list and not a contender for our final top ten.

    Ernie Schaaf

    1----Max Baer
    2----Tommy Loughran
    3----Jimmy Braddock
    4----Johnny Risko
    5----Paulino Uzcudun

others--Young Stribling, Tuffy Griffiths, Jim Maloney, Bud Gorman, Tony Galento, Stanley Poreda, Jack Renault, Unknown Winston

Good names and lots of depth. Schaaf seems to have been the best of the contenders of his era, other than perhaps Loughran. A list which will be a contender for our top ten.

Why not Stribling?--I am just not that impressed with him at heavyweight.

I agree with Gazelle and Jason regarding Schaaf. This is one of the deepest lists when you consider guys like Johnny Risko, Tony Galento and Paulino Uzcudun I had to leave on the cutting room floor. I will also mention Stanley Poreda for another reason. Not only could Stanley have made this list, but it was oft wondered that Schaaf was already damaged goods from Baer before the Carnera fight. The second fight with Poreda should put away that notion. Poreda had outpointed Schaaf, but in the rematch, with Poreda riding a #3 world rating, Schaaf took him apart in 6 rounds. I would attribute the Carnera loss and Schaaf's subsequent demise due to going into the Carnera fight with the flu. But that's my uneducated opinion and off topic to boot.

Man, I don't know unless you want to continue. Offhand I could say Larry Gains, Tommy Farr, Thad Spencer, Leotis Martin, Hurricane Jackson, Henry Cooper and Joe Bugner.

Leotis doesn’t have enough fights much like Ike. Was thinking Galento, Farr or even Cooper or Hurricane are good. Just want the best amongst them to fill out the 50.
Was just talking about Witherspoon in another thread he also seems like an ok candidate

I don't know, I put together a top 5 for Leotis without too much trouble, even having a 6th and 7th that could have made it to #5. But no matter. All the names you've been putting together are fine. I'm just enjoying doing this, so carry on, dude.

Think I’m going to detract Buster Mathis and add Tim Witherspoon. Really trying to stick with the best contenders and Mathis resume doesn’t hold up. Maybe do a one time four person vote last round. Leotis was high on my list but unfortunately injuries derailed his career.

Voting on the last three now!!
    John Ruiz (quiet man)
    Oliver McCall
    Ruslan Chagaev
Vote away last three then I’ll make separate post to vote on the top ten!
