In what could be viewed as a revelation, the voting for the top three spots was very close. The excellent Kid McCoy edges Choynski for the #1 spot by a point. Sullivan comes in 3rd. I thought Sullivan was too far gone to rate as one of Corbett's best, others disagree. Kilrain takes 4th, Mitchell takes 5th via tiebreaker with more total votes.

    Corbett's top five:

    1 ) McCoy
    2 ) Choynski
    3 ) Sullivan
    4 ) Kilrain
    5 ) Mitchell

    Opinions after the fight:

"This fight proves both Fitzsimmons and Hall fit to match any heavyweights in the world. Should a match be made between Fitzsimmons and Corbett I suppose the odds would be on Corbett, and in that case I would have my money on Fitzsimmons, as I think he has a good chance to knock out any man living."

    Pat Sheedy

P.S, Sheedy was at ringside for Sullivan Killrain, and was of the opinion that Fitzsimmons was the harder hitter.

"Fitzsimmons is fit to fight any man in the world, however much weight he may be giving away."

    Ed Carney

A few month after the fight Jim Hall knocked out Frank Slavin, and the Philadelphia record wrote that:

Jim Hall's victory over Slavin has raised Fitz to third place in the championship list, behind Champion Corbett and Peter Jackson.

I seem to be talking myself into giving this fight a place on the list!

One we go to Fitzsimmons who went 15 years of beating everyone but the much larger Jeffries and made a very good showing in their re-match.

    1 ) Corbett
    2 ) Sharkey 2
    3 ) O'Brien 1
    4 ) Ruhlin
    5 ) Maher 2

Ruhlin edged Maher by going 1-0-2 in the series vs him. Choysnki was seems to have lost to Fitzsimmons, but the ruling was a draw so I'm not listing him. Gardner was a good fighter in his day, but not good enough to make tis list.

    1. Corbett
    2. Maher II
    3. Ruhlin
    4. Sharkey II
    5. Hall III

I think that I have made my reasons for these placements clear.

    Only official wins:

    1. Corbett
    2. Maher II
    3. Ruhlin
    4. Sharkey
    5. Hall

    HMs: Maher I

Outstanding resume and I don't include some of his best non HW fights (Dempsey, Creedon, Gardner, O'Brian).

One at a time please, it makes the vote tallying and discussions better. Johnson is after Jeffries, Hart, and Burns, later this month, roughly 13 days from now..

    Fitzimmons

    1. Corbett
    2. Sharkey 2
    3. Ruhlin
    4. Maher 2
    5. O'Brien 1

I put O'Brien at #5 since it was a light-heavyweight fight. I value the wins vs heavyweights more.

Corbett was his best win, Sharkey was probably the second best contender of the era not to win a title (behind Jackson). Ruhlin and Maher appear to be good fighters too.

Fitzsimmons beat Ruhlin and Sharkey within a fortnight of each other.

Ruhlin's previous fight was a win over Sharkey.

Sharkeys previous fight was a win over Fred Russel, preceded by a loss to Ruhlin.

What I am saying is that the timing of these two fights, favors Ruhlin in this ranking.

What amazes me about some of Fitz's win is how conclusive they are.

Maher out in one round. Sharkey in two! Ruhlin suffering a real hammering of KO. Fitz must have hit like Mike Tyson.

Nat Fleischer. Mr. Boxing said that Fitz was the best KO puncher of all time and hit harder than Joe Louis. I dismissed this for 2 decades, now I think he could be right.

We are taking best wins. O'brien to me is better than Maher, and perhaps Ruhlin at Heavyweight. Fitz beat O'Brien in his prime at age 41 when O'Brien was 26. Now that's impressive. Forget the news win, Fitz had a KO here, they stoped the last round with plenty of time to go to save O'Brien from the KO. Fitz must have had a pair of blackjacks for fists.

I am wondering if his power was genetic or a result of working as a blacksmith.

Max Baer said working as a butcher boy helped him punch with exteme power later in life.

I am wondering how true this is. Perhaps lifting heavyweights early in life allowed the likes of Fitzimmons and Baer to have monstrous power, it may have permanently changed their physique.
