Griffith was renowned for his speed, and Ancil Hoffman went to trouble to find fast sparring partners in the run up to the fight. His career high point was probably a couple of years earlier before he lost to Young Stribling, he still seems to have been considered a significant player when he fought Baer, but after that he seems to have been out of contention.

Jose Santa was a monster physically at 6' 8'' and 245 lbs, but I think that he was more European than world level.

Max won every round and could have knocked him out but held back and the corner retired Griffiths.

I think I will go for:

    1. Max Schmeling
    2. Primo Carnera
    3. Tommy Farr
    4. Ernie Schaff
    5. Tony Galento

I thought that he Comiskey fight might end up making the cut, because of the impressive nature of the win, but in the end it didn't.

    Why Farr over Schaff?

I just think that Farr was a little better.

Strong case for Galento. I passed on him for Levinsky whom was coming off wins over Loughran and Uzcudon. However I think Galento has just as fair a shake, he just doesnt impress on film to me and that was my deciding factor.

Have anyone seen better version of Baer vs Levinsky II? It's available in poor quality, I can't judge much from this video.

Everyone agreed on the 1st and 2nd place choices with Schmeling being #1 and Carnera being #2. Baer who was part Jewish was quoted by saying he wanted to show the world a Jewish man could beat a German in a fair fight. Baer was motivated to take the title vs. Carnera. These fights show Baer at his best, and we seldom saw it outside of these fights.

    Baer's best five wins.

    1. Schmeling 35 points
    2. Carnera 28 points
    3. Schaff 19 points
    4. Farr 16 points
    5. Galento 5 points

Baer's stock went up a bit in my mind. Consider this. Some of Baer's best wins gave Joe Louis a tough time. Schmeling KO'd him, Farr competitive for the distance, and Galento floored him. I never thought of it that way for Max Baer. If Baer had a jab and better motivation, he could have really been something.

Now it's Jimmy time. This won't be easy. James J. Braddock. Give me 5.

    Some preliminary analysis for Braddock.

No doubt Baer will take the #1 slot, but beyond that it gets tricky.

Farr is probably his second best win on paper. It was a questionable decision, but the rules are that we take it at face value.

Lasky I would say is the obvious choice for #3, leaving Lewis as the only sensible pick for #4.

Picking a #5 is going to be very difficult! All of his other good wins are at light heavyweight. The obvious choices would be Jack Roper, Les Kennedy, and Corn Griffin!

Okay you can lead off here. Braddock vs Farr was likely a bad decision. Let's keep the wins confined to heavyweight fights.

Baer had real ATG potential. Shame he wasn't motivated.

Baer was legit force, he just wasn't consistent enough.

Wit Braddock, it looks quite poor, possibly the worst resume so far (maybe outside of Hart and Burns).
