The Griffiths and Slatterey fights were at light heavyweight.

That leaved you with Lewis at 4, and god knows who at five!

The Farr fight was controversial though. A lot of people thought he lost.

I can see both sides of the coin. I think that fundamentally was the point he was making though.

The only problem is, is where do you draw the line? We could effectively reduce 95% of the heavyweight fights before the 70s to cruiserweight matchups.

I guess the flip side is that the Cruiserweight division did come a long much later and the light heavyweight division is classified as one of the original 8 weight classes, which is why it’s a tricky one, because you could have someone at 176 pounds fighting a 154 pounder, but that would technically be a heavyweight fight, whereas if you have 2 at 174/175 lbs from a certain point on its classified as a light heavyweight bout.

If I understand it correctly, the difference is that those fights did not take place in a lower weight class.

Whatever the participants weighed, the fights were at heavyweight.

I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with either of the points. We must ask what criterias are we working with and whether or not it warrants flexibility

The heavyweight division has been everything from 154 upward to 200 upward.

I will hold my hands up if I am wrong, but as I understand it, we are only supposed to include fights that were heavyweight fights under the rules of the day.

Sorry, we are asking for wins that took place in the heavyweight division.

You made that point when there was no light heavyweight division.

Should we strike Burns ( 168 ) and Langford ( 156 ) from Johnson's top 5 as both were at or below the super middle vision form Johnson? Not one peep did we hear out of you then. No, because they fought at heavyweight when the matches happened.

Braddock's top five. Jimmy was neither big, nor fast, or skilled. But he was a tough guy who was all he could be. Even in defeat, his showing vs. Joe Louis was not all that bad. He had the bomber down.

Braddock was a man who moved up from middleweight with lousy hands, who, against all the odds became a lineal champion. While I think he's among the worst lineal champions ever and a product of the times, he made a very elite list.

History would have been very different had he faced Schmeling for the title shot.

    1. Baer - No proof, but the way Baer fight looks like a tank job

    2. Farr - Most felt Farr won this one

    3. John Henry Lewis . Braddock 187, Lewis, 176, making this a heavyweight fight. Is this wrong? Sounds like heavyweight fight by the definition of the times to me. Can I get a ruling here?

    5. Dynamite Jackson! ( 38-6-2 ) A top black boxer of the times

Louis might not get shot for years if the happened. But what if Braddock beat Schmeling? A huge what if!
