    My list:

    1. Joe Walcott I (no explanation needed)
    2. Joe Louis (I know that Louis was past his best, but he had not been beaten in over fourteen years)
    3. Elmer Ray II (Ray was on a run of form that included splitting series with both Walcott and Charles)
    4. Joey Maxim IV (Maxim was coming off a long winning streak)
    5. Bob Satterfield (Satterfield was coming off an impressive win over Bob Baker)

Rex Layne just missed the cut, because the timing was a bit off.

Can't rate Satterfield mysel. He was like the little girl with the curl. Beat Summrville, Williams, Valdez, Baker, Harold Johnson, Oma...that's the stuff of legends. Lost to Lindsay, Marshall, Doc Williams, McBride, Carter, Mederos. Truly a puzzle, only Lee Oma comes to mind as perplexing.

Yes but the timing of the win was right, and Charles was himself past his best.

Oh, it's a very reasonable pick, it's just that on any given day most average guys might defeat Bob.

    Walcott will have good depth.

This might help constrain the Charles Walcott debate.

The forum put a lot of stock in Charles win over Louis. While the performance was impressive, Louis was too far gone for this to be his 2nd best win or at least I though so.

    Charles best

    Walcott: 24 points
    Louis: 18 points
    Ray 10 points ( tie breaker via a 2nd place vote )
    Maxim 10 points
    Layne 6 points

Up next is the much talked about Walcott.

Walcott was a very interesting fighter who combined old school feints and footwork with excellent timing, very good hand speed and a powerfull left hook. If he fought under modern rules and the the 12 round limit, he'd be a true legend with wins over Marciano and Louis. In fact he should have beaten Louis in the 1st fight ( imagine that for his first and 2nd best win ) , but we can only vote for official wins and Jersey Joe has his share of good ones.

    Walcott crown jewels

    1. Charles
    2. Ray
    3. Bivins
    4. Maxim
    5. Baksi

Agreed. I wouldn't rank the Louis win as the second either, Louis was too far past it.

    An interesting piece of trivia.

Jersey Joe Waloctt stopped Harold Johnson, and fourteen years earlier he stopped his father Phil Johnson!

Walcott's options are muddied by Ring Magazines decision to suspend the rankings during the war.

Bivins, Baksi, Murray, and Sheppard all gained high rankings during the war years, only to lose them to a lot of fighters who had been inactive.

Walcott then beat them in 45 or 46.

The Baksi win took place before VJ day, so I am guessing that Baksi was still ranked #2 when Walcott beat him.

Bivins was dropped from champion to #3 at the end of the war, and did not loose between then and Walcott beating him.

Lee Oma was ranked in the top ten, and coming off a good winning streak, when Walcott beat him, and it was a through thrashing.

Perhaps that fight is in the argument.
