I think that Walcott has good depth.

You could go a few beyond five, and still have good wins to choose from.

With lower than expected voting, Walcott's scoring was on the easy side.

    Walcott''s 5 best

    Charles 15 points
    Bivins - 10 points
    Ray - 9 points
    Maxim - 6 points
Baski ( tie breaker over Johnson ) 3 points.

We now move on to one of the most talked about fighter in the forum, Rocky Marciano. Voting starts now, and ends Monday AM

    Rocco Marciano

    1. Walcott 1- Walcott was a late bloomer and this is a very impressive win. Great ko
    2. Charles 1- Charles was slightly past his prime but still very good
    3. Moore- good win, Moore wasn't the greatest hw or anything, but he was a great fighter and a good heavy
    4. LaStarza 2- After the controversy of the first fight- Marciano put any doubts to rest with a stoppage
    5. Layne- Layne was inconsistent but a good fighter nonetheless.

    Surprisingly thin for Rocky, guess the 2x Charles, Walcott, LaStarza coloured my preception;
    Walcott
    Charles
    Moore
    Layne
    Louis

    Rocco Marchegiano's five best

    1. Walcott for the title. Walcott at his best, with a Ko that's still being discussed and studied today.
    2. Charles
    3. Moore
    4. LaStarza
    5. Louis - One of Rocky's best filmed performances.

Layne to me doesn't make the cut. He was a loser more often than not in key matches and Marciano clearly had a tough time with LaStarza.

LaStarza edged Layne head to head, and had some fine work eariler in his career before the title shot with Marciano with wins over Brion and Bucceroni.

    Rocky Marciano

    1-----Jersey Joe Walcott
    2-----Archie Moore
    3-----Ezzard Charles
    4-----Rex Layne
    5-----Joe Louis

Not making the cut. Roland LaStarza--I just don't see him as a better fighter than the 1951 Layne who was coming in off impressive wins over Walcott and Satterfield. Harry Matthews--an impressive KO of a guy who was never counted out against anyone else and had been undefeated over nine years and 52 fights.

As for Layne over LaStarza. The win for LaStarza in 1953 was a razor thin decision, and LaStarza had nothing like names such as Walcott, Charles, or Satterfield on his resume. Even Brion also lost to Layne.

I am surprised at the love for LaStarza.

While he was the #1 contender, he was a bit of a flash in the pan.

Rex Layne for contrast, beat Walcott and split a series with Charles, and Marciano beat him at his pinnacle.

He was a very strong contender of the era.

I see it differently. LaStarza might have beaten Rocky, in the first fight. Even his own brother says it was a very close fight. LaStarza gave Rocky a tough rematch. LaStarza also beat Layne himself. So he has by far the best effort vs the subject material and head to head win. A fine boxer, if he had more power he could have been really good.

Can we all agree that Rocky officially ended the color line?

Surely that was Jimmy Braddock when he gave Louis a shot?

LOL. Jimmy would rather lose to Joe than Max.

IMO Braddock who was out of the ring for two years, used the title Baer gave him to retire on. A wise investment for him.

So he was the first heavyweight champion since Jack Johnson's time to give a black challenger a title shot. Ergo, he ended the colour line.

By that logic, it would be Tommy Burns. With big enough purse in my opinion the color line goes away. A main reason way Braddock fought Louis.

What Rocky did, by fighting the three best African American champions in title shots to be is ending the color line. Maybe Louis can be credited for being a great example.
