Ingemar Johansson’s 5 best wins 1 Patterson - Easy pick 2 Machen - Another easy pick 3 Erksine - Fringe contender, had some decent wins in his career 4 Cooper - Before Cooper became a contender or he’d be higher 5 Neuhaus - Put together a nice enough record but was at the end of career You could put 3-5 in any order or even put London, Cavicchi, Richardson, or some others in instead Not a lot separates his best wins once you get past Patterson and Machen
Liston, first 4 easy but... Patterson Folley Machen Williams 1 Clarke Could have Summerlin, Bethea, Valdez*(faded version) DeJohn but felt Clarke was prime when an ancient Liston beat him. Not mant stopped Henry in his career.
On Monday. It's a holiday weekend so I gave Ingo an extra day for the voters. As for which lineal / Ring magazine champion will be the toughest., we'll get to his name this month.
All 8 voters chose Patterson for the top spot, and Machen for the 2nd spot. There was a close call between 3rd and 4th place. Give yourself a pat on the back if you got it exactly right ( Bogart ) Ingemar Johansson’s 5 best wins Patterson 40 points Machen 32 points Erksine 18 points Cooper 16 points Neuhaus 7 points
On to Liston we go. Where will the much talked about Cleveland Williams land? Time will tell. Spots 2-5 could be tough as a Liston's was iced out of contention after the 2nd Ali fight. Voting ends Wednesday night. Sonny's top 5 Patterson Williams Machen Folley Valdes
- Patterson - Machen (him and Folley were close, I just think Machen was trickier) - Folley - Williams - Bethea (a guy who went the distance with everyone and Liston destroyed him)
I am going to think about this some today before making my list. Patterson, Folley, Machen, and Williams are certain choices, but the order may vary. Contenders for spot #5: Nino Valdes-----probably the best career of this group and a former #1 contender, and not that far removed from the #2 slot, but had lost his last two major fights and was nearing the end. Roy Harris-----was ranked #6 and had a 29-1 record going in, with his only loss to Patterson. Beat quite a few good man, including Pastrano, and also Baker and Powell who were 3-0 against Valdes. Mike DeJohn-----a guy with a fairly good record over the years and with a punch. Lost twice to Valdes in split decisions, but blew out both Miteff and Powell, who beat Valdes, in one. Wayne Bethea-----not that hard to beat but Liston was the only guy to KO him. Liston has a deep resume, fought most of his top men in their primes, and defeated most ot them very decisively. On the down side, though, all of them except Patterson always fell short in their biggest fights against other contenders.
I was thinking of listing Betha, not because he was a top talent, but because its Liston best filmed perfomance. Looking at the the top 5's, the best resumes tend to have a very good #3. A person who beat other top fighters and could give any one a tough night.
Sonny Liston Patterson Machen Williams Folley Valdes Liston has a good resume. The only guys with better wins than Sonny before his time were Louis, Schmeling, and maybe Rocky. I am obviously referring to lineal champs only.
