What is the best footage on Joe Louis, not necessary the latest, as it must also be the greatest display of his skills.

    I'd recommend the Louis-Baer fight.

Max Baer, that is...from '35, before Louis became champ.

rc, I agree. THIS is the Joe Louis of his BEST NIGHT, when he was at his frightening most lethal. Notice ESB, that triple left hook against the GRANITE JAWED Max Baer. This Joe Louis would have flattened every heavyweight champion after him. Of that I am certain. A coil-spring unwinding, was my favorite heavyweight, and most admired champion of my times...

And his footwork and mobility Burt...he seemed to never be as complete and total a package as that night vs Baer.:good

U, I just again watched this Joe Louis /Buddy Baer fight in 1942. I have seen this many times previously, but something didn't look right. Louis's punches seemed slower than the Louis I had seen many, many times. So, I just checked the fight against my watch. The official knockout was 2 minutes and 56 seconds. My watch showed the time of the film was about 4 seconds longer. So the extra 4 seconds on film made Louis's punches seem so much slower than he actually punched in real time. I have read for example, that
a boxing historian ran the film of the Dempsey/Willard fight in REAL TIME, and he was astounded how Dempsey's speed in actual time. And I just also found that the Louis/Buddy Baer fight film was not in REAL Time, thus making
    Louis seem less impressive...
What does this all mean.? Don't judge oldtime great fighters by the films of their time. If Joe Louis with fairly modern battery operated cameras, were not
real time accurate, think how the hand-cranked cameras of Dempsey's
time were off? No wonder the fighters looked primitive, and walked and appeared like a Charley Chaplin movie...Today in politics, it is the economy "stupid",
in boxing's long ago past it's the camera...Cheers...

Louis was simply magnificent, what a tragedy that there is currently no one wih skill set remotely close.

That's the absolute truth..and I must say that I always didn't feel that way...oh, I knew that Louis was great and all, but I always had him getting ko'ed by Dempsey, Marciano, Liston, Ali, Foreman and Lewis in hypothetical matchups...head to head, he always fell short with me...until fairly recently, that is. I realize now, and it was while reviewing the Louis-Max baer fight that he was capable of ko'ing ANYBODY that he could catch...and believe it, he would catch you..catch any of the greats..past or present. He was the greatest heavyweight champion, period, IMO. His technique was perfection and he could either get you with one shot, or hurt you and finish you off precisely.
