Thank God and Jim Jacobs for the existance of these tapes, it brings a tear to your eye to marvel at a practitioner of this quality, but also sadly reminds us of the heavyweight rubbish served and hyped up to us in recent years.
You would have to watch at least five Joe Louis fights to get the measure of him. A salutory leason for those who would judge earlier fighters based on a single fight reel!
Honestly Louis fundamentals are so good I could watch him in ANY fight at any point of his career. His absolute best was against Max Baer in 1935.
Louis himself said he felt that the Max Baer fight was his best fight - felt that he could have fought all night. Said he threw 254 punches at Baer and missed once.
It was a AMAZING performance by Louis, and IMO, his very best...not to be exceeded when he became champ, and throughout all his defenses. Louis had it all in this fight, and poor Max was totally, and completely outclassed.
Which 5 fights would you say are the best? Baer does appear the best. I've always felt this. Schmeling 2 is quality. What else.
Abe Simon & Buddy Baer II. Louis was vicious also against John Henry Lewis, but only poor quality footage of the bout exists. Hell of a job finishing Arturo Godoy in their second fight as well. We might be missing out on the Lou Nova performance. I think the way he chops down Primo Carnera is also a very good effort by him.
Some of my personal favorites (mostly demolition jobs): [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KRSuRgo1xs[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUl656wKPX0[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47UVZSvDVgI[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ovh8VkTxYI[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBiyX9oDgNE[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91SNCeMgPyM[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSt7ziz_XWQ[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojYzKAPq6-Q[/ame] 6:50 What a beating once Louis decides to open up!
