I`ll have to have another look at Calzaghe, only realy remember him moving forwards, however he was one of the few fightes during the 90`s that didn`t just rely on athleticism.

100% Agreed. Even more of a reason why I think fighters like him should be studied. Some fighters just don’t have the quickness to be up on toes and moving non-stop. A fighter like Louis I believe shows boxing principles that are universal and even so called “flat footed” boxers could benefit from watching him

Lol, Wlad wasn't a plodder but I do think his footwork was overrated. Vitali had better footwork in my opinion.

Wlad had the quicker feet and was lighter on his feet but he all too often stood right in front of an opponent. Yes he was quick to move away when he decided to move off but much like Joshua now he was often complacent and would just stand there at times. Which is why Sanders KOed him, also why he learned to clinch so much because he couldn't control range that well with just movement against a fighter who would just rush him.

Vitali in comparison had slower feet, planted he feet more but he moved off the center line consistently after throwing. You only need to compare their fights with Sam Peter to see the difference. Peter would regularly force Wlad onto the ropes, where he was more vulnerable, because he'd back up in a straight line but Vitali constantly turned Peter so the fight was fought predominantly in the centre of the ring where Vitali had the advantage. Try as he might Peter just couldn't get Vitali on the ropes consistently because of Vitali superior lateral movement.

Willie Pep. I haven't seen anyone as consistent, quick, and apt in every direction as him.
