I've been interested in Chuvalo for awhile now. One of the toughest and well built heavyweights ever, considering he is one of the few who made it out with his senses still intact . What's some of the best footage I can watch of him, what are he best fights whether they be his most exciting fights or his best performances?
Well, I'm tempted to say his fight with Quarry...right off the bat,..but there were others, where he was more consistantly in command, like vs Doug Jones....and one that I saw that he looked boss in, vs Manuel Ramos.
His 1965 Ring magazine Fight of the Year against Floyd Patterson in front of a packed Madison Square Garden in 12 pulsating rounds, is the high point in George's exciting career. Others of note include stoppages of Alongi, Jones, Quarry and his series with Bob Cleroux.
I wouldnt pick Quarry. He lost every round of that fight and got his face absolutely mangled only to pull it out with a questionable stoppage. I would pick Jones, Patterson (who he clearly lost to and whined painfully about but it was still a good fight), and Ramos, and Williams (who was shot to pieces but a rare occasion to see Chuvalo beat a well known fighter), Mederos, James J Parker, and Mike DeJohn. Crixus Chuvalo never stopped Alongi, or even beat him.
My mistake, he never stopped Tony Alongi. It was given to Alongi and later changed to a draw, due to an error in the referee's scorecard.
His fight with Oscar Bonavena was a war between two real rugged brawlers. Close decision that went Bonavena's way...but many thought George pulled it out.
Chuvalo's fight with Cleveland Williams was a exciting fight between two weathered veterans. They fought on the undercard of Ali-Mathis in Houston.
I would go with the Mike De John fight...they jobbed him of a knockout in round 2, but that round is quite spectacular. Try to get a high end copy with decent sound. It makes all the difference when watching these old matches.
We could use Chavalo today. I doubt he could win a belt, but he would be a truth machine for prospects.
I dont know, he could have just as easily been DQd for all the low blows he was throwing in that fight.
True... He definitely was a rough fighter. The herculean headbutt he launched at Mathis was incomparable!
I wonder if any of his fights with Bob Cleroux are available. Not sure if they were exciting fights or not but they fought three times with Cleroux taking two out of three. Two tough guys who could also crack.
He paid for that too. Mathis uncharacteristically lost his cool and kicked Chuvalo's ass for that infraction.
Ive got highlights of all three. Cleroux was too strong and every bit as durable for Chuvalo and a better boxer to boot.
