best hands in boxing

Best Jab......... Larry... or Ali....

 

When i think of a great right, ironically i think of Schmeling.

I know not the best, but great by any standard.

 

There's different criteria, for me the best southpaw left hand is Whitaker's, because that is 'hitting without being hit' (the art of boxing) at its best, he stands at an awkward angle with his chin tucked into his shoulders, and steps in and pops it, then he's back out.

For the best right hand punch, you cant really be wrong far if you say Hearns, pure, pure, pure power.

Its so great how Duran hits people with his straight right hand from distance, he stood off, didnt telegraph it, and it just shot out rapid and closed the distance on his opponents. With a right hand and boxing braiin like that he didnt need to cut off the ring. Againl, hitting without being hit.

 

Olivares' left hook.

Joe Frazier's simply cannot be overlooked, that was natural to him.

 

OMG , how could i forget Sonny, he could not only provide a fast ram rod jab, but he had the versatility to hook of of it.. Amazing for a big man...

 

Well, Gunboat Smith said Schmeling had the hardest and shortest right hand he ever saw. And he saw them all from Johnson to Louis. So, your mentioning of Schmeling isn´t that "ironic" - why ironically btw?

Ingemar Johannson´s right was very good. As was Marciano´s.

Hopkins´ lead right hand is one of the best ever.

Whitaker´s and Winky´s southpaw jabs are up there.

What about Lew Jenkins´ right hand? He built his whole career on it.

 

Sorry for the late reply Loewe, the reason i said 'ironically', is because the thread starter mentioned Louis and i replied with Schmeling!

Hopkins' lead right is one of the best, great off the feint, great countering with it, he can do many great things with it, and its underrated in terms of speed and power i believe.

Johannsen's right is a given in a thread like this, i dont like calling a fighter a 'one-handed' one (hate that kind of talk), but it was certainly his principle asset in the ring.

 

If nothing else Eugene Hart had one of the very best MW left hooks of all time, due to being in a wheelchair as a kid and developing unbelievable arm strength... And he had a limp, which actually aided in the hook.

Much like Frazier he took a near disability and turned it into his greatest asset.

Yeah, I agree.

Hart may of lacked a lot of things but he could throw a triple left hook as fast as any fighter I've ever seen, like it was natural to him.

Cyclone fit him well as a nickname... Threw that hook so damned hard he did a 180 sometimes when he missed.

 

Liston's jab is overrated. Certainly when it comes to variety, and when people mention it was one of the best ever. It was a solid weapon in terms of it's effectiveness. The type that would push an opponent back on his heels. But it wasn't a real fluid point scorer like Ali's or Holmes', or Hearns' for for that matter. Ali and Holmes would throw the jab from waist as well as the up high around the shoulder and head. And IMO both those guys had faster jabs than Liston. Just more well rounded jabs across the board.

 

Holmes had the best HW jab IMO.
