We were spoilt in the 1970's,were n't we ? So many classic, exciteing heavyweight fights. The '80's were very poor for this. I'm not saying that a lot of the bouts were n't competitive, because a lot were. They were just very dull. The only two that stand out in my mind were the Larry Holmes - Tim Witherspoon fight, and the one between Evander Holyfield and Michael Dokes. I may well have forgotten,or overlooked some others. Please remind me guys.
Holyfield/StewartI was fun. Razor/Bonecrusher lacked class, but was entertaining. Holmes/Snipes had a fair bit to it. Snipes/Washington was probably as close as we got to an 80s Foreman/Lyle.
"Holy-Dokes" is the best non-title fight at 200+ pounds of the 80s, but either Holmes' fights with "Cooney or Spoon" were the best title fights of that decade... Runner up: "Dokes-Weaver 2" of 1983.... :hey:good:happy MR.BILL:hat
Dokes was a 10 to 1 underdog going into that Holyfield fight. Nobody was picking the guy to win and the consensus was the best he could do was hang in there. He did better than that but the bout was not looked upon as a competitive bout when it was signed, the way lots of other 80's fights were.
