I think Liston's jab is not in Holmes' league. Holmes pumped that jab out for 15 rounds and did it FAST! Liston's jab was heavy, but slow as ****. He couldn't hit Machen with a single jab for 12 rounds. Ali dito. Handspeed is essential for a great jab; Ali, Louis, Holmes, Lewis, Klitschko, Thomas have it, Liston doesn't.
I liked Holmes jab. Ali used a backfist type of jab. Lewis and Vlad both have excellent jabs. When I watch Vlad I see him developing and learning at this age. He may be getting better. He fights very controlled.
I always felt Louis had great power and accuracy to his jab, Tim Witherspoon and Carl Williams has great jabs when you see there fights with Holmes.
Holmes and Liston are probably the two most obvious but I think Lewis' was underrated. He could use it to find range and score points or he could do genuine damage with it depending on what was needed! It's close between them three for me
Holmes and Lewis would be my top 2...I would probably put Lewis at number 1 though. The sheer speed and power of his was immense
Wladimir, Holmes and Lewis in no particular order. Each of these guys has/had amazing power, accuracy and speed behind the jab. Ali had a quick jab, but didn't have the power these guys have/had behind it. On the same note, Big George Foreman had what I call the super slow jab that for some reason delivered power on another level altogether. It's like he draws on zero point energy or something, because his punches were sloth like, but were absolutely devastating.
Best heavyweight jab? I don't know. Lewis, Rahman, Bowe, Klitschko (Wlad), Holmes - I could go on and on. The guy I will mention didn't have the best jab but it was a great weapon of his and combined with his stance made it even more potent. I don't think he has been mentioned yet. Double M - Michael Moorer.
what surprises me is that he had barely any am fights. holmes, biggs, ali, whitaker, comacho, all evolved or perfected it in the am ranks. rahman just learnt quickly that it won fights and helped set up his right hand. his finest performance with it was against tua...who was no mug and had been able to dodge lewis's and byrds jab pretty effectivly. pretty underated(i hate the word but hey) guy and talented. oh and welcome back :good
I like Larry Legend's jab (no disrespect, Bird). P.S. Wlad's got the jab of a seasoned, consummate professional and the heart of a flaming homosexual and to date he's been unable to reconcile the two.
