I have no opinion on this one way or another.

I don't agree with Callis on anything much really, but it is theoretically possible that he is right and we are wrong.

Researched comments and behaviour made byJeffries indicate it is Callis who is wrong,on all counts.

Maybe attacks on Dempsey show he is becoming less racist. Johnson and Louis deserve criticism for helping to uphold the color line but I don't see why someone would have an issue with Lewis. I guess Lewis came across as a bit homophobic but that comes with the time I guess and isn't really any different than his contemporaries.

You missed the part where he reasoned his avoidance of black fighters because they smelled like animals.

Dude was not very evolved, even for his own era.

We can’t say it is impossible that a 17 year old who works out at my local gym could beat Jeffries either. I guess we’ll just have to accept never knowing for sure.

He says Lewis avoided Southpaws and clever orthodox fighters as proof of the former he said ,after beating Ocasio ,Lewis stated he would not fight another southpaw. When I pointed out Ocasio was not a southpaw and so would not have said that, he called it,"a rare mistake on his part"lol I asked him which Southpaws he avoided when champ he said Sanders Byrd,Moorer and Joe Hipp .
I pointed out Sanders was not ranked until after Lewis had had his last fight, and Hipp , never a ranked contender , was ko'd by Morrison ,whom Lewis ko'd he did not reply.Nor did respond when I said Lewis comfortably out pointed Tua who ko'd Mooer in one round,he again did not reply.
I asked him several times which clever orthodox fighters Lewis avoided but got no answer.
He alleges Louis had his own referee and was mobbed up,something he said several times on here.Dempsey had an iron bolt in his hand against Willard and was scared to fight Kid Norfolk. The guy is mentally ill.

Mendoza might be borderline schizophrenic but he has his moments

Even through a global pandemic, and a near global conflict, the Mendoza and Mcvey rivalry somehow lives on. Oddly heartwarming

    Only on one issue.

Let's play devils advocate, and say that he is right about everything else.

Okay, he is wrong about Jeffries attitude towards blacks whom he frequently called skunks,******s and coons.
He is wrong aboutJeffries ethics and morals, he twice reneged on paying gambling debts.
And he is wrong about Jeffries height.
I don't know Callis' opinion on other fighters, but,all in all I'd be far more likely to give credence to almost any posters opinions on here rather than Callis'.

    Again, let's play devils advocate.

Perhaps he has some old fashioned values, and he can reason his way to Jeffries not being racist.

Does that mean that he is wrong about Jeffries in a head to head sense?

I think that he is personally, but only based upon what he has written about that.

As for his opinion on other fighters, he totally favors the old timers.

Bob Fitzsimmons was the greatest fighter hat ever live.

Jim Jeffries was the greatest heavyweight that ever lived.

Jack Johnson was the second greatest heavyweight who ever lived.

The further a fighter gets from that era, the lower they slip down his rankings.

As I said his opinions hold no more gravitas to me than the average posters here do.I don't consider him a historian, more a repeater of other, older persons opinions.I class him about the same as Bert Sugar.
Johnson considered Fitzsimmons a greater fighter than Jeffries, and so do I.

I have some"old fashioned values," but they don't equate to racism.

Greg, you are as solid and polite a poster as I’ve ever encountered. If you call another member (or ex member in this case) an idiot, everyone rest assured, that member is an idiot. Doza is an idiot.

    Yep, good old Dr Z.

Per his accents and bias, Ialways assumed that the letter Z in Dr Z phonetically stood for the first letter X in Xenophobe.

Doza could have just as easily called himself Dr X but then he probably thought Xenophobe started with a Z anyway. Next week on Sesame Street…. ;)
