Hit the nail right on the head IMO. I have a hard time putting Louis and Ali above him at times. The guy has one of the best resumes in the sport and I think it get over looked because the black fighters and champions seem to bring on the opinions that they weren't as good as the white champions or that they were second tier fighters. However with watching what little film we have of them id feel confident in saying that the history of the HW title would be very different in the first quarter century had those black fellas been givin a fair chance.

lewis and ali are 1 and 2, Louis is in my top 8 but both rocky and Dempsey are nowhere near.holmes foreman Tyson frazier and liston are the others in whatever order,
not rating Tyson doesn't make sense.

so you don't think a heavyweight weighing 190lb from a hundred years ago would beat them ??

I think Holmes, Louis and Johnson all had the right style to defeat Dempsey. Larry could keep him at bay with a superb jab and right cross. Louis had hard precise combination punches off a well timed jab and Johnson had superb ring technique, reflexes, feints and boxing brain to tame the great Dempsey. Jack Ds relentless aggression and punching power would blend well with these 3 class fighters in FOTY contenders. Joe Frazier and Marciano would also be involved in classic contests against the 3 which they would probably lose. Holmes and Johnson have good enough ring movement to defeat Louis, which was one of Joe's few weaknesses. Johnson could time Holmes jab and beat him to the punch in an intriguing match up. Would be interesting to throw a larger heavyweight great like Lennox Lewis into the picture who would surely cause all these great champions problems with his size, reach, height, power and ring iq. However I believe all could potentially ko Lewis so who knows! Throw in other great heavys like Foreman, Liston, Tunney, Tyson and even the Klitschko brothers who would surely cause a different challenge to all former champs. To me a prime Muhammad Ali beats all these fighters with his superb speed, athleticism, movement and of course heart and chin. His toughest and trickiest challenge would likely be Johnson who can match him in many departments. I believe Jack Johnson is 2nd best heavyweight off all time.

I voted Larry Holmes but Jack Johnson and Lennox Lewis deserve a mention.

In a head to head sense Lennox Lewis may run the table he was that good. As far as achievements Lawrence Holmes is hard to ignore.

I have Ali, Holmes, Holyfield, Foreman... Louis is a few spots down in my opinion.

Anyway, Holyfield is a hard one to rank so high for some. At one point in his career he was 30 years old, 28-0 (22) overall, 10-0 (7) in World Title Fights (CW and HW), and 5-0 (2) vs. Hall of Famers. Holyfield also has the record for beating the most Lineal HW Champs (7). He beat Lineal HW Champs Douglas, Foreman, Holmes, Bowe, Moorer, Tyson x2, and Rahman. He also drew with Lineal HW Champ Lewis (although many felt Lewis deserved the win... with that said many felt Holyfield deserved the win in the rematch).

Gene Tunney, and not other than Louis and Ali. He was the best of them all, bar none.

On paper Jack Johnson has the numbers.

I honestly wish the the Police Gazette had ranked fighters during his era!

I go back and forth between Holmes and Lewis. I think Holmes has a better record, but Lewis fought better comp. I clicked on Lewis but had I thought about it more, I may very well have chosen Holmes. Pretty close either way in my eyes. Dempsey isn't all that bad a pick but I don't think he defended his title enough times to be on as high as 3rd.
