All the old time black HW greats...

    Jackson
    Langford
    Jeanette
    Wills
    McVey

The guys like Ken Norton, Cleveland Williams, Tommy Farr, Jerry Quarry, Q Murray, Jimmy Young... often get mentioned.

    :good

Don't forget the Tuaman either. He beat Ruiz, Maskaev who would go on to win a belt and destroyed Moorer who was a former champ.

ken norton was champion. he got robbed against Ali and was rightfully rewarded in 1978 by the WBC

What about billy conn. He fought great for 14 rounds against joe louis

Razor Ruddock would of been champ in another era

The important point about the great black heavies you mentioned ,as distinct from many of those others have named ,is that they never got the opportunity to challenge for the title .Lots of the others tried and failed.

Agreed. Some will disagree with me but I'd add George Chuvalo to this list. He got robbed against Terrell and fought a tough close fight with Floyd Patterson that was the fight of the year.

Razor Ruddock deserves to be mentioned as well. He would have given Tyson a tough fight in Edmonton 1988 -1989 when they were supposed to fight.

Yes, Mercer won the WBO title from Francesco Damiani in 1991. Ray was only the second man to hold that title since its founding.

I'm surprised no one here has mentioned Jerry Quarry. Man had one hell of a comp list, and did real well against them too.
