Being a punching bag for 10 rounds against someone with an iron chin like Chavez is no strategy at all. Sounds like sour grapes from Lopez here.

The Chavez fight was more like an afterthought to Tony. It was late in his career and it was $.

The Lockridge fight won 1988 Fight of the Year. When Rocky cracks you with an overhand right and your staring at the ringlights you find out pretty quick what your made of.

    Check it out.

If he was so great at defense he would have been better. I like him. I met him at the hall of fame dinner.

Chavez was no longer a great fighter at the time he faced Lopez. He had lost a ton of confidence. Tony could have hit him on the chin they would have called it a low blow. If Julio had failed to land a punch he was coming out the winner regardless.

I know what you mean. I recall when I saw the fight when it happened, I thought to myself, 'Really? they're stopping that fight?' And to tell you the truth, Tony Lopez' opinion on the fight really hasn't changed much because I also recall the post fight interview on what he thought of the fight and he said, "To tell you the truth, it really wasn't that tough." And I will also say - despite the fact that I really liked Chavez - courtesies were being extended to him undoubtedly through the King/Sulaiman connection. I recall scoring the second Chavez-Randall fight (it should be noted that one judge scandalously scored the first fight for Chavez) and Dr. Flip Homansky, who examined the butt-induced cut on Chavez said he was going to let it continue, but Chavez told him no, it was over, which technically was a corner retirement. But it was then allowed to go to the scorecards. I had it even at that point (with the point deducted from Randall for the headbutt) but of course chavez wins it on a split. But the point was they let Chavez dictate the ending. He refused to go on when the Dr. was letting it continue and they let it go to scorecards. He was an all-time great but he certainly did benefit with his WBC/King association late in his career.

Best Jab: “I don’t know, that’s a good question. I really didn’t get hit with a lot of jabs. It’s called defense, move your head.”

Strongest: “I had a few of those. That’s going to be a hard one because I was a strong junior lightweight. I can’t call it. You stumped me.”

    >>>Okay, might we have a look how good I was type of fighter? These replies are self-serving.

    Chavez was Don King's concubine.
