I agree. But, I do wonder just how much credit Hagler would have actually received for starching Leonard. The build up to the fight had already laid the path for the post-fight '...foregone conclusion' and 'too much to ask of...' narratives, had it all gone terribly wrong for SRL. In any event, we're talking very fine lines here, in terms of impact on Hagler's legacy.
I thought Ray won 7 or 12 rounds, and if Ray did get tired Marvin should have realized that a fighter coming back after 3 years would be given credit for many of the rounds just for still standing against the mighty Marvin Hagler. Marvin was a great fighter. Against Hearns he was at his best when he pushed it and had a guy fighting back like that, but like many of his fights Marvin could lose rounds when he just does not do enough. Against Hearns was his best tactic of pushing it. In fights where the action got relaxed he sometimes sat back and didnt do much.
I agree with Hagler's loss to Leonard dings him a bit. Ray was out of the ring for a while. I disagree that Hagler is below Monzon. Monzon's competition isn't nearly as good, not does he look as good in the ring.
He was also acting a little with that leaning down and then he would have a spurt. Hagler took for granted many things. He was better when he knew what the challenge was and had a gameplan. The Petronellis were good, but it shows how good Marvin was that their limitations were not exposed more. In his last and probably most watched fight they hurt him. There was no urgency. Not really.
What struck me is that Hagler said that it is hard to This content is protected a fighter when they are just trying to survive. Hard to KO sure, but if it was really difficult to win against that style, everybody would run & fight defensively.
The guy could blame everything but himself for fighting Orthodox. He had watched rocky 2, was feeling himself, and gave away some early rounds. I had it scored a draw. If he has fought the whole thing southpaw I think he definitely wins.
