Leonard won more rounds. The first four count as much as any other four. MMH was allowed to cut off the ring. He was allowed to fight southpaw. He chose not to or, in the former case, was unable to do so. EDIT: Oh, Leonard landed more punches by punch stat. I’m sure you’ve got a video somewhere that discounts every punch Leonard landed and makes it as if Hagler was landing all the punches he missed (Leonard outlanded him while throwing more than 150 fewer punches). TL/DR: Sorry your guy lost.
His said Ray had the fastest feet, Duran used his hand speed to land more on Hagler than Ray did, if Ray had thrown more he could have made the list with the fastest hands but then he would have got countered more.
What does how many punches one throws have to do with how fast their hands are? That's workrate, not hand speed. And Ray threw plenty. There was footage all over yesterday on the anniversary and Ray threw some blistering flurries -- way more than Duran did. It's hilarious that the general reactions to these 'Best I Faced' is 'he didn't give credit to the guys who beat him,' whereas with Marvin it's 'he gave credit to the guys he beat, which is what he should do' even though Ray beat him. I also like how the Marvin Hagler Athletic Supporters Club has taken on his bitterness over the loss. (And it was a loss, you can even look it up.)
Leonard may have been slightly quicker but Duran`s quick hands were bothering Hagler while Leonard`s weren`t, Duran fought a better offensive fight v Hagler than Ray and at least had quicker hands than Hagler, I get Hagler`s logic,Duran fought a great fight while RAy was just pot-shotting with the occasional flurry.
You know antman, I think it’s lucky for the boxing world that you never became a boxing judge. Just think of all the weird scorecard you would have come up with. You would’ve ended up doing 20years in jail for the robberies
Yes he lost those fights. Completely shot by that point. But he had enough in the tank after one fight in 5 years to best Marvin.
Marvin was completely shot by that point . why kid yourself??? That's why Leonard un-retired to finally face off FORMERLY Marvelous Marvin as illegit as wi9nning two titles from Lalonde Leonard improved from the Hagler fight as the rust came off in 1988, 1989 but Norris exposed his limitations, softened him up for his next opponent in an unfair fight against the much shorter Hector Camacho (also shot) but, looks like his luck ran out. too bad we found out 'Ray Leonard really CAN be knocked out!"
So bitter. Good thing Ray didn’t give Marvin that rematch he wanted. He’d have to come to the ring in a walker, lol.
Well, the thread seems to be salty, so I'll go with the flow. It's no wonder Hagler describes Leonard the way he does. Ray was the PR princess with a legion of clueless casual fans, while Hagler was getting chronically and severally underrated, especially skill-wise. Then after almost twice the fights Leonard had, at the end of his career when he has already stated the famous quote (hard to wake up in the morning and do the roadwork when you've been sleeping in silk pajamas) and clearly lost a chunk in term of mental fire and physicality, Ray comes out of retirement, having fully fledged boxing matches fought under NDA to prepare himself in secret. He agrees to be the B-side like a good dog and gets a larger ring, larger gloves, and a 12 round fight in the process. Of course Hagler goes easy on him thinking there is going to be rust. For the reasons now known there isn't. And yet the fight was barely an incredibly controversial split decision with one botched scoring in favor of Ray and a large panel of experts giving it to Hagler after a through analysis. Hagler dropped the fight by expecting Ray to be rusty and by agreeing to all the advantages for Leonard (gloves, ring size, round number) in exchange for being the clear A-side promotion wise. Still, Ray was the opportunistic, card-stacking vulture who had the audacity to question Hagler while he needed to get every advantage in the book as if Hagler was the final boss of his life career.
TL/DR: Ray cheated by sparring for the fight. Hagler conceded some things to get more money which makes Leonard the Dr. Evil of boxing. Leonard won and Hagler stans are still mad.
