not as much as the hurt camacho put on Leonard and his fans, namely, YOU

 

The Leonard fan's classic case of playing dumb; "I don't see what any of that has to do with him beating Hagler."

 

The Leonard fan LIKES deceiving himself

it helps them cope with the losses, no matter how embarrassing

by accentuating the positive and not seeing the negative, any fighter can become great no matter how short or how lacking their professional record

 

That doesn't bother me a bit.

Why should it?

He lost. He lost to Norris. So what?

Why does Fighter A losing to someone else years later have any bearing on the night he beat Fighter B?

I'm a Ray Leonard fan. And a Roberto Duran fan. And a Thomas Hearns fan. And a Hector Camacho fan. Every one of them has won fights and lost fights ... just like Marvin lost to Ray. I'm a BOXING fan.

 

Now I love both guys. I have the greatest respect and admiration for both. I prefer Marv as a person.

But we must admit... Marvin must have thought it was Christmas when he signed to fight Ray. A small, weak welterweight who hadn't fought in years, and for around 17 million? He got greedy and paid the price that 17-odd million could never erase.
That's on him.

Marvin was allowed to cut off the ring. That’s what you do when someone moves. But Marvin just followed him around like a puppy.

 

Leonard was a very great fighter and more than likely a top 12 or 15 ATG. No problem there. But many people didn't believe he won that Hagler fight, and I'm one of them.

He certainly did a supernaturally great job, considering he was many years rusty and seemed to not have much of a punch at middleweight (made it even more impressive when he took the light heavy title). His movement was at times extremely impressive and his hand speed was more than intact.

The problems were numerous for me. For one, I do believe in taking the fight to the champion (unless the challenger is a good puncher while backing away/moving laterally) something guys like Holmes and Ali were really good at. Hagler instead was the aggressor for the vast majority of the fight, certainly the heavier puncher (Ray rarely stepped into his punches during the match, in fact I'd daresay he did little more than arm punch for the bulk of it).

I'll use Norton-Holmes for an example of an exception to my "challenger needing to take the title". Holmes moved really well against the advancing Norton, but scored many telling blows against the champion. This didn't happen much in the Leonard-Hagler folks, though I respect some of the opposing viewpoints on this particular subject.

Ray never seemed to hurt Hagler in the least, mostly just surprising him with his hand speed and admittedly excellent movement.

These are just my own viewpoints, all respect to others. Full transparency, I am just a bit more of a Hagler fan than Leonard, but count myself as a huge admirer overall of both.

 

I love Briscoe. I love that he was bald and was called "Briscoe".

Hagler v Leonard was extremely close.

However, I did just review Halger v Duran.

Very concerning if the commentary teams’ observations were in any way reflective of how the judges scored the fight.

Hagler would land 5-6-7 punches consecutively, head and body then Duran would land a single right to the head and both the team and spectators would wet themselves over it. Unreal.

The very workman like fashion Hagler applied seems to have caused an unjustified disservice to him in scoring. His punches were of uniform quality and power - well above average. No single punch necessarily stood out from the rest to give rise to “spike” reactions or attract sudden notice for its stand alone attributes - the type of random punches that might disproportionally impress the more casual observers but certainly should not fool trained and experienced judges.

If I was disappointed in Hags in that fight it would only for his performance as measured against himself and how much more I thought he could do but didn’t , not relative to the opponent who Marvin clearly defeated IMO.

IMO, that was a 5-6 point fight easily in Hags favour and tbh, the actual scores were somewhat insulting to Marvin.

 

Yeah, not Hagler’s best moment but the Duran fight really wasn’t close at all.

 

I love Monzon. I love that he had lots of hair and was called “Monzon”.
