First of all, great thread. I agree with this post... no one can foul like Bernard. Floyd is great at pushing that limit, and Cotto just flat out breaks it, but only does it once or twice to shift the momentum if he needs it. Overall Bernard just knows how and when to do it. He's the best.
seriously Hopkins will be fouling a guy all day without the ref noticing and then when his opponent retaliates, he's the one who gets a warning from the ref.
This won't work because in boxing you're aiming for such target areas that at times you can go a bit low or miss your target as the person shifts, etc.. Determining intentionality is damn near impossible in many cases.
This is Bhop hands down. Floyd only used the forarm for hatton and cotto low blows for judah. Bernard has made a career by frustrating his opponent with the headbutting.
A few comments after reading the replys. I think you guys are dead on about Hopkins, he's a master at using that headbutt. It's very sneaky and very effective. As far as Cotto is concerned, the Judah fight is not the only fight where he went low. However, it was the most blatant form of his low blow punch. He used it against Corely and Torres as well. He was much more sneaky with the punch in those fights. Concerning Mayweather, some of you guys are way off. The Hatton fight was not the first time he used the foreman, and he doesn't just do it when guys are crowding him. Floyd uses that forearm as both a defensive and an offensive weapon. When guys are crowding him he'll use it to keep them off of him. However, he'll sometimes angle his body on the inside, give a shove with that forearm to create an opening, then crack his opponent with a straight right or left hook. He does this beautifully against Hatton in like the 3rd or 4th round. Watch his fights against Bruseles and Jesus Chavez to see other examples of this.
There's nothing illegal about Floyd's defense. He blocks his head and pivots side to side. It's not his fault Hatton bulled in with his face and took a couple forearms to his ugly mug.
You're not allowed to extend your forearm like that. If it was legal, the ref wouldn't have warned him and he wouldn't have been deducted a point against Castillo for doing it.
To be honest, all three use more than one illegal tactic. However, let's just focus on one illegal tactic for each.
Well, the one that uses several illegal tactics in the most obvious manner is BHOP. Even considering only one, he like somebody mentioned above does not need a jab as he leads with his head, so I voted BHOP.
Yeah...and a few of his punches strayed low against Torres. Still, and fighter who commits to the body will occassionally land south of the border...I wouldn't necessarily classify him as a dirty fighter because of it. I have seen Cotto use a fairly educated shoulder-bump from time to time to create angles on the inside...but Hopkins is the master of this (and pretty much every other) illegal tactic.
