It was good to see Johnny Addie as the ring announcer (not to be confused with radio/tv announcer) way back in 1952 for Marciano-Layne. I didn't know he went that far back, but I always liked his staccato, to the point, no bull**** way of introducing the fighters and announcing the scores after the fight. Any other announcers stand out for you? I'm sure there are some Buffer fans here....the "lets getting ready to rumble stuff" never quite did it for me, but I'm sure others may like it.
My favorite is the announcer from the Danny Lopez/Mike Ayala fight.......don't know his name though.....anyone who has seen it knows what I'm talking about. :good
Chuck Holt was the best. He was a business-like announcer - no overhyping things or messing around. He was around for a lot of of a prime Tyson fights. Great at his job!
Yes Chuck Hull & Jimmy Lennon Snr were class acts. Hull in Vegas in the late 70's - 80's & Lennon in the Californian boxing scene 70's & 80's.
Addie relly goes all the way back to Joe Louis's early days of boxing. Around the time of the Carnera, Baer, Braddock mess about. I have a bunch of Louis fights, and Addie seems to be there from the start more often than not. Braddock, Two Ton Toney and others off my mind right now. My vote goes for the legendary Billy Jordon, He was great at the Gans Nelson, Johnson Jeff, Britt Nelson fights. "Let em Rip".
Never knew Addie went back thar far. He was active into at least the 1970s, maybe even later. He was around for the FOTC, I know that much.
The thing is as a ring annoucer, you can go on for near forever, until death I belive. He is not taking hits, or punchings and retiring because of ill body. Thats why they last about 50 or so years.
Buffer is amazing. A true class act in and out of the ring. Boxing is lucky to have him. Jimmy Lennon jr is also very good. There is a lot wrong with boxing, but the ring announcers are not part of any problem. Does anyone know exactly when Michael Buffer first said, “Let’s get ready to rumble “?
Chuck Hull. Boxing is indeed lucky to have Buffer, but I never liked when announcers get as excited as the crowd -it creates an effect that looks like a high school pep rally. Hull's calm demeanor amid a storm of excitement increased the drama: [YT]q3fZ_bSAy8Y[/YT]
