What are some examples of fighters not known for a great jab but will occasionally put on a performance that has their best display of the jab? First to come to mind would be Roy Jones Jr against Vinnie Pazienza. Probably one of the few times where RJJ used his jab to great use.
Jones used a brilliant step off jab and lateral movement against Ruiz too. I was impressed that he didn't just spam hooks and fought a very mature fight. Imagine putting the brain of old Jones in the body of his younger self. He'd probably be the #1 h2h of all time. In more recent memory, Maidana showed crazy jabbing skills in the 2nd Mayweather fight and showed he could adjust. Errol Spence completely dominating a p4p prime fighter like Mikey Garcia by jabbing his head off was a criminally underrated performance. Garcia could do absolutely nothing. He couldn't get inside, couldn't counter, couldn't fight on the outside. Prime Tyson had several moments where he shocked the commentators outjabbing much taller men despite being 5'10 with t rex arms.
Mike Weaver v Scott LeDoux - one does not normally think of Weaver as a jabber but he kept his jab in the face of LeDoux for 12 rounds showing a different facet to his makeup. Also - although, admittedly, it has been a long time since I saw the match - I seem to recall Victor Galindez performing very well with the jab in the Rossman rematch. I seem to recall him using it - not as a point-getter - but to jab his way in to unload on Rossman. But again, it has been awhile since I saw it.
Roy Jones against John Ruiz was the first to come to mind. It's not that Roy a lot of jabs, as his workrate was low (Larry Merchant said Roy was a genius of economy in this fight), but he used it very intelligently and effectively. Tyson outjabbed Tony Tucker, who is about half a foot taller and a foot advantage in wingspan. Tyson more often used the jab to set up bigger shots, but wasn't really able to get to Tucker with bombs. However, he was able to use a heavy jab well on its own.
Yeah nowadays he certainly does. Prior to the Garcia fight he was more of a pressure fighter attacking the body and breaking guys down.
I remember that fight on April 14 1979, Victor Galindez fought a very smart fight, Mike claimed that he broke his hand.
