I've been in the game since the very early 70's and in the hub of the sport (for many decades) in NY. I know it's history and I know how to fight.
Chuck Wepner (or one of those guys) said Liston's heavy jab started from the other side of the ring....and still hit you.
Thats a great quote. It reminds me of when he fought Ali in the first fight. He would lunge with two jabs and cover the entire distance of the ring. Wepner fought some great fighters, but always had a certain reverence when he talked about Liston.
I met Wepner back in the very early 80's at the Turtleback club in NJ. He drove up in a big white Cadilac and walked in alone in a white Disco type suit with an open collared shirt....very 70's. Stood at the bar next to me drinking one after another. The guy was just huge and remember thinking he was the biggest hwt I ever saw in person. Anyway he seemed not to want to be bothered but did get his autograph. After about 45 minutes he was back in his Caddy and gone.
To complete the picture he had a gold ring on each finger aside from his thumbs and a multitude of gold chains around his neck.
