We all know that when it comes to boxing, Journymen are the heart and soul. They are the true veterans and can prove a prospect from a pretender. Whos the best in boxing right now?? My vote goes out to Edner Cherry. I really love watching the kid fight, God bless him even though he has talent and can give alot of guys trouble I cant see him ever cracking the big leagues.:-(
It depends, are you talking journeymen, or gatekeepers? I would say the likes of Cherry could be considered gatekeepers, whilst Johnson has been robbed more times than the local candy store. A good journeyman from the UK was Mark Ramsey http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=6307&cat=boxer Notable results include: Two points losses to Ricky Hatton - Hatton respected Ramsey a great deal A draw against Junior Witter A points loss to Colin Lynes (Former European champ) A draw against Tommy Peacock (touted as the next big thing before being chinned by Hatton) There are a few decent ones in the UK, but Ramsey springs to mind pretty quickly.
Brewer, Mock, Whitaker, Austin, Williams are also good at what they do And of course Strickland - might not be the best journeyman, but a legend none the less!
I think Thaxton could have gone a bit further if he had been better managed. For starters, he boxed above his optimum weight, meaning lower power and less chin - that said, most of the names to have beaten him are decent, Hatton, Romanov, Magee, Dunne etc. I am not saying he would have been world class, but certainly would have challenged for an alphabet belt.
Hard to say who's the "best journeyman", because if you're really that good, then you're a gatekeeper or a contender, not a journeyman. A few journeymen I like who always put in tough, entertaining fights are Sherman Williams, Darrell Woods, Fernando Angulo (although he might be considered a contender these days), Cristobal Cruz and Rogers Mtawga.
The starting point for a journeyman is a guy who loses half the amount of fights that he actually wins, such as 20-10 etc. A guy like Peter Buckley, 31(eight)-249(10)-11 is a good journeyman, in that he gives guys rounds - in his earlier days he won a fair few, and was the first man to go the distance with Naseem Hamed. But on the other hand, doesn't really come to fight. Once that **** me off are the Nobby Nobbs fighters, who come for a pay day and take a dive if they cop a few good shots - journeymen are there to give guys rounds but test them, not just pad their ****ing records! For instance, 140lb'er Nadeem Siddique is 22-0, yet is still fighting six twos, as opposed to challenging for British title honours!
