Someone...is claiming that Shinya Aoki has better JJ than the aforementioned Maia and Jacare. What do you guys think? Aoki [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIuYaoMbhX4&feature=related[/ame] Maia [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pImvS0OuQdU[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-hVAkSVN2c[/ame] Jacare [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aAbd3HM960[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYRufLMT5xM&feature=related[/ame]

BTW, any choice in the poll is fair I think, but those who think Aoki should not be in this poll are plain blind (literially or metaphorically)
Roger, Jacare, and Maia are the best pure Jiu Jitsu practitioners in MMA. Aoki doesn't have the same Jiu Jitsu credentials, but in MMA, he makes it work. Nobody in the lightweight division really wants to be on the ground with him. However, you look at the Shaolin fight, and Aoki avoided the ground as much as possible.
hard to say really....maia hasn't had a sub win in awhile, while aoki obviously has, but ufc/dream rules are slightly different, as is the comp level....i honestly haven't seen enough of jacare to fairly judge him
They would be wrong. In the context of MMA, Maia has shown, by far, the greatest profeciency out of any of them against a higher level of competition. (Aoki also gets use out of his tights which provides extra traction which Maia and Jacare or even Roger doesn't have. Look to his fight against Gilbert Melendez to show how helpless he was on the ground. Part of it was because Melendez is a very cerebral fighter and trained with Rubber Guard experts but some of it (less, obviously) was because he was unable to utilize that added friction. It's an unfair advantage that he exploits to the fullest)
(Re)read the part about competition level. I put that in there hoping to avoid comments like this one.
*Sigh* This is what I hate about questions like this. By picking one people seem to have the amazingly stupid idea that by picking one you're somehow saying that the others are not good or that you're somehow dismissing them in some way or another (either big or small) I'm not saying that he's a terrible submission artist. He's easily one of the best. However we're not talking about some of the best, we're talking about the best. In the context of MMA, against a relatively high competition level and the showcase of technique and their applications, Maia wins.
Not saying that at all. In fact, I have already said, in this thread, that Maia, Jacare, and Roger are the best in MMA. All i'm saying that Aoki is not lost without his magic pants. He was totally ineffective against Melendez, but I credit that more to Gilbert's gameplan.
so what is it, competition, or tights....i already said the competition is dream isn't the best, but he has fought some decent fighters w/o the tights, and dominate is not squeak by with a LnP win...he completely dominated/submitted the competition
if you want to argue competition, i can agree, if you want to argue magic pants, i would have to say you are puffing the magic dragon, focker
