Can't argue with that choice. Great fighter, great champion, tough matchup in any era:bbb.

    :huh

Aside from 122, what other division was Gomez great at? He is without question the number 1 guy at 122, but Chavez has a very good case at being number 1 at 140, not to mention he's a top 5 or even 3 at 130 and was a force at 135...I can understand you saying Monzon and Arguello being ahead of Chavez, but Gomez? no ****ing way. However, i do think Gomez should of been in this poll as well as Carlos Ortiz and Wilfred Benitez instead of Cotto, Chico and Camacho.

You could make a case that Gomez' work at 122 was as good as Monzon's at 160. I think what he did at that weight is as much as what Chavez did at 130 and 135 combined at least. I would have no problem rating Gomez higher than Chavez. Chavez was great but I think he is a tad overrated. Taylor and Rosairo were probally his best wins. Those were very good wins but he does not have the "meat" on his resmue as other ATG's. Arguello's wins blow his out of the water.

His record is a bit padded as well. Since his first 40 or so fights were basically an amateur carrer with the bums he was fed because he was still developing as a fighter. Kinda like his son in that regard. His 100 wins don't look as good as Arguello's or Monzon's 80 to me.

Don't get me wrong he is still great. I am not trying to knock the guy. A top 35 ATG in my book no doubt. I just can't see the justification of rating him in the top 20 like some.

Doesn't you name mean "buzzard" in Spanish?

There's something about a long championship reign that really impresses me. 12-15 Titles defenses usually looks better to me than being a 3 division champion.

It all depends on the era and who these champs fight of course but the reason I rate Monzon, Hopkins, Gomez, Hagler, Duran, Louis, and Holmes so high is because it is so damn difficult to be the best at one weight class for so long. How many fighters can say they were king **** at one weight for at least 6 years made 12 defenses? These guys can and there are only a handful.

With as many alphabet soup champs as there are today being a multi-division beltholder is devalued some what and unifying one division takes longer and is more prestigous. That is why I rate Hopkins so high. Gomez to me is on that level except he didn't do as much when he moved up in weight.

    I'd say Monzon.

I actually think Sanchez was a better fighter but his untimely death means he didn't have the longevity to cement that position.

I also rate Jofre very highly but from that list, Monzon gets my vote.

Chavez was a 3-time division champ and had 16 title defenses at 140 if im not mistaken...or somewhere along those lines...Also the most succesful title defenses (27) Just thought id let you know.

and no my name isn't "buzzard" in spanish.

Chavez was a beast and his work at 140 was great. The title defenses were not consectutive but I am not gonna nit pick. Personally I like what he did at 130 even better.

Gomez himself made 16 or 17 title defenses at 122 and never lost at that weight. Also the fighters he fought during his championship reign were superior to the fighters Chavez fought at 130 and 140.

It's not like the fighters he lost to at 126 when he was near his best were chump change either. Prime Azumah Nelson and prime Salvador Sanchez. He did beat La Porte at feather as well.

I rate Chavez ahead but only by a hair. Both top 35 ATG's.

Carlos Zarate was definetly one, but other than that i cant honestly think of anyone he faced that was superior to Taylor around the time he fought Chavez....Wasn't Taylor on the top p4p around the time??

^ I agree overall, but Meldrick Taylor was really something at the time of the Chavez fight...After it he clearly wasnt the same anymore.

No they dont :nono His Biggest wins are about on Par with Chavez. But i put Chavez higher since he was never beaten until he had clearly lost a step , where as Arguello was beaten a few times before he got older. Also in a HTH matchup im leaning towards Chavez at LW and JW. A fight at JL would be a tossup.

Chavez title fight record 32-4-2-23 kos all losses were when he was past it.
    Gomez title fight record 20-2-0-18

Say what u want about Chavez fighting taxi drivers but his Record in title fights speaks for itself that he fought loads of top fighters, Not to many fighters in history (if any:think) can match that.

Gomez was definitley a great fighter and probably cracks my top 50 ATG list but he is way below Chavez on that list.
