As a boxing fan, the light heavy weight division is one I do not have very much knowledge about. I like heavyweight more. So, who are the lhw greats I should start watching?
In no special order except for the top three: - Ezzard Charles - Archie Moore - Michael Spinks - Gene Tunney - Bob Foster - Eddie Mustafa Muhammad - Harold Johnson - Billy Conn - John Henry Lewis - Roy Jones Jr.
There have been a lot of them, but longevity plays a big factor when choosing a great light heavyweight champion.
The second Saad Muhammad vs Marvin Johnson fight in 1979 and Saad Muhammad fight in 1980, terrific fights.
Ezzard Charles Archie Moore Michael Spinks Matthew Saad Muhammad Victor Galindez Gene Tunney Bob Foster Eddie Mustafa Muhammad Harold Johnson Dwight Qawi Billy Conn John Henry Lewis Roy Jones Jr. Marvin Johnson
For entertainment value ya cant go past Saad. Ive said this before, an argument could be made that the light heavy division in the 70s was every bit as stacked, if not more so, than the heavies.
William Guthrie vs Reggie Johnson for the IBF 175 title in 98 This content is protected A fight most Hardcore fans haven't even seen. Reggie Johnson is probably the most underrated fighter of the 90s. Having lost extremely close decisions to champions like James Toney, Jorge Castro x2, John David Jackson, Antonio Tarver(sadly this fight has disappeared off the internet). I personally thought the only fight he lost was the 2nd Castro fight. He also has a very close win against Steve Collins.
Have a look at the latest FOTF thread - there's a couple to watch there: Saad v Conteh and Spinks v Davis.
An Extended Appreciation Thread for the Lushless Light-Heavies; Historical or Otherwise. That, should be a fun way to spend quarantine... as for the question of the thread title. My picks are Moore and Spinks. As for the question in the OP, I'd start with Ezzard Charles (he's the go-to #1 and his 2nd fight with Lloyd Marshall, a go-to top 10 LHW, is on film) or Archie Moore, then for entertainment guys like Marvin Johnson, Victor Galíndez and Saad Muhammad.
