Inspired by @RJJFan interesting thread on Mayweather vs Barkley I wanted to ask which MW greats (ATG or HOF level) people feel Mayweather could beat or be competitive with or is MW simply a bridge too far? Btw I am talking full MW not catchweight scenario. For context some posters on RJJ's thread felt Floyd could have beaten Barkley who I would consider a HOF level fighter. I am opening this up to any era of the division although the farther back we go the harder it is to make an analytical argument (Money vs Ruby Robert lol!). Btw I feel that there is a possibility that Floyd could have snatched a MW belt against a weak champ, like Roy did vs Ruiz at HW, but I am talking about the best he could stand a chance against.
Considering the success that Spinks had, I don't think Jermaine Taylor is out of the question. Could probably beat the 160 lbs versions of cotto, canelo and Martinez Could probably beat a Felix Sturm type who wasn't super dynamic but did have a terrific jab, high guard and would be strong and well conditioned
He could’ve beaten Martinez during Martinez’s prime or beaten Canelo at 160. GGG likely would lose on account of being an easy target for a lead right and showing too much respect. I think Kalambay would lose every second to Mayweather. I also don’t think McCallum would be able to deal with him. Julian Jackson would also lose. Hagler struggled with Duran and lost to Leonard off a layoff, making him a candidate for an upset regardless of the fantasy warriors’ indignation.
Where do we even begin with this monstrosity of a post? There’s silly. Then there’s you. On a whole different level. In the real world, in the majority of his WW and JMW fights, Floyd was a cautious fighter with a more limited offence than when he was younger. He had bad hands and limited power. And he only fought above WW just THREE times, where he NEVER ventured into the MW division. Those are the FACTS. Yet in your LSD induced state of mind, Kalambay wouldn’t have won a second off of him, Mike McCallum couldn’t have dealt with him, and he also would have beaten Martinez, Hagler and GGG etc. The same guy who struggled with a faded Oscar and a crude Marcos Maidana? “Nurse!!”
Interesting point re Spinks! Sturm I would not consider HOFer but Cotto, Canelo, Taylor yes of course. I forgot he beat Cotto actually! Don't know much about Martinez, have to investigate.
The 152 version of Floyd that put on a masterclass against a green Canelo would do well against a lot of Middleweights to be frank.
I didn't read the OP thoroughly enough to see HOF, Sturm likely isn't but he was a championship level guy for many years and had some good wins I think it's tough to grade Mayweather against the Hall of Fame type of guy at a weight he never fought at and it should be seen as a feather in his cap to be able to beat a guy who's very good Considering same day weigh-ins for Old Time Fighters that would give Floyd a little bit of help to not have to fight a guy that blows up 15 lb overnight.
The guy turned into daffy duck when Margarito ambushed him & was haggling over gloves with Maidana & we had to wait years for the Pac fight who ended up fighting with a torn rotator cuff while this guy was getting retroactive exemptions for shady IV use Remember when he called out Winky for a fight at 154, got him to agree to a rehydration clause & then was not heard from again? Ya this guy is suddenly going to beat Hagler lol Hagler had a closer fight with Duran than people expected but well Duran is Duran Like most fantasy fights, you know that Floyd would have found a way to get out of it or waited years to fight the guy at the right time & right place (like where he gets retroactive exemptions for IV use)
Provocative post as always! IMO Floyd would struggle to repeat his easy win over Canelo at 160 as Alvarez had filled out and was more experienced fighter then. While I admire the Canelo win as it was at a catch weight I am not sure how Floyd would deal with the extra poundage? Sumbu beat some really solid MWs (and an ATG in McCallum) and during his peak only lost to Nunn, a 6ft plus speedster, by freak KO. I just feel his has too much experience against bigger fighters. Also remember he beat brawlers and technicians, while they have very different styles, Herol Graham was a box of tricks so it is not like Kalambay didn't defeat quick classy boxers. Jackson I have no idea but he did stand toe to toe with The Gman in the first fight and took some hellish shots so Floyd isn't going to hurt him and every round re JJ would be like walking through a mine field. I feel if Hearns and Leonard avoided McCallum this fight would probably not happen! No shame in avoiding the Bodysnatcher
It's well known that Winky priced himself out. BTW Mayweather won a big fight with a shoulder injury.
Kalambay was sort of a passive fighter. I don't think his height and size would be enough to beat a guy who was better than him at his own game. And Kalambay beating McCallum suggests that Mayweather could do the same.
I always find it fascinating how some fans are far more confident in their favorite fighter than the fighter itself ever was. There's a reason only time Floyd fought a natural 154 pounder - He requested significant catch-weight.
He’s not my favorite fighter. But there’s a reason why you’re talking about catchweights and “natural” 154 pounders when Floyd beat two other past or future 160 champs at 154 without a catchweight, and it’s hate.
"Other"? As in other than Canelo? I assume so as you proceeded "other" with talk of catchweights and he fought Canelo at 152lbs, not 154lbs. Which "other" 2 fighters did Mayweather beat at 154lbs, that later went on to be 160lbs champions?
Cotto did and Oscar already had, so technically I made an error. Thank you and I’ll correct the post.
