We knew it was going to happen.

I thought id create a thread with h2h matches with some of the top guys from both eras just to see who comes out on top.

I've tried to match them evenly to get some entertaining fights.

    So, who are you picking?

    Tyson vs Frazier
    Holyfield vs Ali
    Lewis vs Foreman
    Bowe vs Holmes
    Moorer vs Norton
    Botha vs Wepner
    Bruno vs Cooper
    Tucker vs Young
    Mcall vs Chuvalo
    Ruddock vs Lyle
    Morrison vs Shavers
    Witherspoon vs Quarry
    Golota vs Spinks
    Seldom vs Patterson
    Mercer vs Bonavena

Bonus: Old Holmes vs Old Liston.

You can use any versions of that fighter from that era.

    Tyson KO 3 Joe Frazier
    Ali w15 Holyfield
    Lewis KO 7 Foreman
    Holmes w15 Bowe
    Norton TKO 11 Morrer
    Botha TKO 10 Wepner
    Bruno KO 1 Cooper
    Young W12 Tucker
McCall w12 Chuvalo ( Chuvalo was diminished by the 70's)
    Ruddock KO 7 Lyle
Shavers KO 2 Morrison ( but could go either way )
    Witherspoon TKO 9 Quarry
    Golata KO 1 Spinks
Old Holmes TKO late old Liston.

    Conclusion: 90's 9 wins. 70's 5 wins.

EDIT: some other matchups were added by the OP since I tallied up my points.

    Some very good matchups.

    Tyson vs Frazier (early blowout)
    Holyfield vs Ali (tough fight)
Lewis vs Foreman (older, wilier LL schools Foreman)
    Bowe vs Holmes
Moorer vs Norton (even matchup but Moorer wins w/ much sharper, tighter punches)
    Botha vs Wepner
    Bruno vs Cooper (wipeout)
Tucker vs Young (peak Tucker outjabs Young)
    Mcall vs Chuvalo
    Ruddock vs Lyle
Morrison vs Shavers (don't trust Morrison's jaw in this)
    Witherspoon vs Quarry
    Golota vs Spinks (blowout)
Seldom vs Patterson (even 70s Patterson has skill & power to win)
    Mercer vs Bonavena

Bonus: Old Holmes vs Old Liston. (boxing clinic)

90s: 11 (+ bonus) to 70s: 4. A few of them could have gone either way though.

I have it 10-4-1 in favor of 70s. Certainly McCall Fight, Quarry fight and Morrison fight could go the other way. Tucker-Young too close to call.

Agree the 90s pool is a little deeper. But, the top 3 fighters of the 70s are better than the top 3 of the 90s. And, therefore I believe the 70s Heavyweights trump the 90s. Both decades are excellent ones for heavyweights. Makes the abominable current Heavyweight landscape look even more pathetic.

Note, I think you could have done a bit better job of picking the best of the 1990's. Bruce Seldon does not belong, and neither did Botha.

Ibeabuchi and Vitlai Klitschko were in the 1990's, and they would destroy many of the people picked for the 1970's

I'd also add Tua over say Golota.

I agree with a lot of these except Cooper over Bruno and Leon over Golata. Frankly I'm surprised you arrived at those outcomes.

I agree Cooper over Bruno was a very odd call.

And Leon over Golata as well. Can you imagine the Golata who battered Bowe from pillar to post losing to Leon Spinks?

I find some of McGain's posts odd. Maybe if the Queen's life depended on Cooper winning with only Cooper knew it....Nah, I'd still pick Bruno.

I'd also pick Golota over a much smaller and rather mediocre Leon Spinks.

    1970s wins most of those

    For the 1990s ...
    Botha over Wepner
    perhaps McCall over Chuvalo.

There's a few others that are close either way.
