I'm talking strictly offensive technique here. Who has is the most skilled offensive operator of the last 18 years? It won't be Pacquiao, Golovkin or Tito. Tough all 3 are great offensive fighters, all were heavily reliant on sheer physicality and aggression. I've come up with 4 candidates. -Marco Antonio Barrera -Jorge Linares -Vasyl Lomachenko -Oleksandr Usyk All four were brilliant technicians. MAB, to this day I've never seen better and more fluid combinations live. I'm 26 years old by the way. Could fight backwards, forwards, side to side, left hand, right hand, body punches, basically anything related to offense, there was nothing he couldn't do. Jorge Linares while he may be a step below the other 3 fighters overall due to his fragility and somewhat leaky defense, he's not lacking any offensive skill. He can at times be poetry in motion. The Loma Linares fight was the highest level of offensive skill I've ever seen in a ring live. Vasyl Lomachenko is called the matrix and he's earned that nickname with his sublime skills. Best footwork I've ever seen from anybody on live TV, ever. He's knocking out guys and making people quit, top level guys at that, with mediocre power. He's not even truly banging people out, they just can't take the embarrassment because he's peppering their torso and face into embarrassment. It's unreal. Oleksandr Usyk is 200 pounds with the grace and skill of a lightweight. He's 6'3" and 200 pounds, he doesn't the benefit of less mass and a lower center of gravity. Yet he's still in perfect positioning at every moment in the fight. He's still got great fluidity to his combinations. And still has tremendous shot placement and accuracy. Very special stuff.
good post, glad to see Linares getting a mention in this. You're correct that he is fragile, has a leaky defence, and i don't like to say this about a man who fights for living, but he seems to lack heart. But his offensive skills are brilliant
Marquez was not a great offensive technician. He struggled to take the lead. Pacquiao was no slouch skill wise, but he was just as reliant on his physicality as skill.
Wonjongkam, Mayweather, Marquez... Inoue, Kovalev... all upper tier random shouts. Hard to really qualify the criteria. Defense has to factor in certain respects as well, otherwise the offense wasn't so technical if it backfired or crucially exposed other weaknesses (why I might disagree with Linares). How good are Lomachenko and Usyk against a capable inside fighter? Being an "offensive technician" must greatly factor diversity; fighting off front foot and back, fighting in the clinch, breaking a high guard, being able to keep distance while scoring, experience with right and left handed opponents, etc. Even after long established careers, there is always debate to be made regarding depth of skills. At a certain point, the debate turns to resume talk, haha.
Lomachenko. Offensively brilliant, crowd pleasing and FAST. He’s FAR from boring and doesn’t have to resort to illegal tactics like certain others fighters. Usyk is a close second
That Loma vs Linares fight was truly beautiful, it was art. My memory is short but I dont ever remember a fight involving more skill and grace
I haven't seen those four listed throw many check hooks, lead right hands, jabs to the body, and shoulder roll-counter right hands.
