Johnson, Louis, Marciano, Liston. jeez, tyson was very good, grea for a while but he wasnt invincible to someone packing a full set of elite skills.

Louis slow methodical approach waiting on his opponent to show a hole and hand placement screaming for a quick knock out. Liston at a solid 215 gives Tyson something to think about.....throwing Louis in there is like throwing a little sheep dog in with a pit bull.

I wish we knew more about Jeffries, personally. Not that he had a very long career anyway.

If some the stories are to be believed, he's some kind of uber human who was a marvel of a fighter that was never quite duplicated again.

If you had a lenient ref, and the stories about Jeffries durability are true, I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that Tyson could blow his wad trying to get Jeffries out of there. Tyson was a great fighter at his peak but we did see multiple iron chinned guys either stretch decision or take him the full distance, even when he was in his prime. Tyson landed an absurd amount of punches on the incredibly durable Mitch Green and Ribalta also "weathered the storm" for a bit.

I think Louis hand speed would better serve him than Liston's lack of hand speed. Louis would have a better chance of catching Tyson coming in. And had much more accurate punch placement than Liston. But keep in mind, this is not asking which old time heavies beat prime Tyson, but which would have the best chances of pulling it off in comparison to other old time heavies. Louis and Liston would both be on the list. Not saying they'd beat Tyson, but to me, they stand a better chance than say Fireman Flynn or Luis Firpo.

What do you think of Charles or Walcott chances of pulling it off?

Old timers like Jefferies trained using wrestling in camp, perhaps that might have had impact against Tyson.

Despite Tyson winning by UD, Bonecrusher Smiths tactic of holding frustrated the hell out of Tyson, so a skilled grappler might just bring something that tilts things in their favour.

Mitch Green hugged, boxed negatively and clinched his way to a decision against Tyson as well.

    Quite possibly.

Johnson's clinching, combined with his inside game, could be bad news for Tyson.

Yea Tyson sucks in the Clinch but its not like you can realy land something big on him...
Its realy stange to talk about this fight because Johnson fight in a totaly different time, there fight different and no one was even close to tyson, who was as fast as him ? who had his defence? who had his technique ? or flexibility ?
No one, and i´m sure Tyson would knock every one of the old dudes out..and its pretty unfair for the old school guys!

Liston didn't lack hand speed in his prime. He was also a far better close range combo puncher which is much more important for Tyson that's where you need to be at least have a shot.

People who mysteriously also revert to the Douglas fight is proof they don't watch full fights on here when they use him as reference of Ali defeating Tyson.

Douglas had a Liston like jab and also kept that fight in the center ring for the most part and was able to physically push Tyson back and maintain control with his 6'4 230 frame.... Louis is not doing this certainly not to a prime Tyson.

Joe Goddard has the right gumption to quiet the bully in Tyson. He would stand up to Mike and call his bluff. I'd stake my wig on it.

I don't think Tyson would fight in any way like he did would he have been around back then. If he tried to apply modern boxing at the time, I think he would learn that he competes in different sport. I'd bet someone like Jeffries or Johnson would not even try to box someone who came in like Tyson, just intercept and wrestle. And those guys could wrestle properly. Tyson could not. Put '88 Tyson into the 1900s with his 1980s style and he would would get tired out and stopped. If you put Jeffries and Johnson against Tyson in the ring in 1988, he'd knock them out. Different sports really. Back then boxing was more about durability and endurance and I think Jeffries/Johnson proved themselves vastly more than Tyson in those areas - not saying Tyson is not durable, just never had to prove it like they did.

Yeah, I would give them a good chance of pulling it off and making it out of the first round but 2 or maybe 3 max.
