Hopkins could fight as well inside as outside, and Holyfield wasn't a pure boxer at all. Hagler was a powerful counter-puncher in the 70s. Trinidad was flat-footed, not a boxer. I would say Marciano was more slugger because he tended to wait in the crouch before throwing one of those out-of-sight haymakers, whereas Frazier for instance just kept bobbing his head and letting hooks fly.

Gene Tunney, Billy Conn and Larry Holmes were better heavyweight outfighters than Ali.

Was Tyson really a swarmer? He never worked inside. He waited in the crouch at mid-range before pouncing. Aaron Pryor is what you call a swarmer.

**** thread. Too many hybrids to pick one. Pick one and someone will argue he done this or that different in some other fight.

The ultimate hybrid is Duran or SRR.

The ultimate swarmer is probably Greb and but good shout above with Pryor. Fighting Harada is a good one.

The best boxer puncher is Joe Louis.

Sluggers are like Foreman, Graziano, Basilio, Fullmer, LaMotta, Ketchel

Out boxers would be guy's who don't get hit or like to box behind the jab. Pea, Loche, Mayweather, Pep, Wright.

A good example of a great boxer/brawler hybrid is Ken Buchanan.

Well he certainly isn't a good inside fighter now and hasn't been for many years. Did you watch his last fight with Maidana? The guy is allergic to in-fighting. His whole strategy revolves around scoring points by thowing a jab to the body and pull counter right hand from the outside then clinch.

Its very difficult to categorize Tyson. I suppose ultra-skilled slugger. He evaded technically, countered in combinations with short correct shots. But he wasn't an outfighting jabber and didn't set up power punches with his left hand, and he was aggressive yet poor inside.

I think that a lot of the names mentioned so far, while undeniably great, are not particularly good examples of their style. My picks would be:

    Best boxer – Willie Pep
    Best swarmer – Henry Armstrong
    Best slugger – Terry McGovern
Best boxer puncher – Ray Robinson

Another great hybrid of outboxer/boxer-puncher would be Monzon.
