I think the obvious choice is Lionel Rose beating Fighting Harada. Going into one the greatest bantemweights ever hometown and beating him is absolutely huge. But a few others worthy of mention.... Jeff Harding in his first fight against Denis Andries, underdog coming back from a beating, beautiful finish one of my fondest memories of an Aussie boxer. Danny Green stopping Eric Lucas for the WBC interim title. The reason I mention this one is because I consider Eric Lucas to be one of the toughest fighters of the last decade. Whenever top chin lists would come up I would put Lucas on that list because he time and time again showed how good his chin was against top fighters. No one had done that to Lucas before and no one has since. Ive got a few more but might see if anyone else can add to it....
2 out of that 3 for sure. BTW Lucas was injured and not half the fighter he once was, not bagging Green's performance but this fight doesn't fit your original heading
What about the older Barry Michael beating younger Lester Eils for the IBF world title over 15 rounds?
besides the ones mentioned... Kostya VS Zab - Zab look unbeatable at the time, i for one didnt give Tszyu much of a chance and thought he would get outpointed. To win in the 2nd round by one of the most memorable KO's of all time is simply amazing. Zab never looked the same after this fight, i think his mental problems have alot to do with being beaten so badly by Tszyu. Les Darcy vs George Chip - Chip had fought some awesome competition (he had beaten Greb twice before meeting Darcy). Darcy dominated Chip after fighting a 20 rounder no more than 20 days before hand. His death was truly awful considering what he could have gone on to do. Fenech vs Zarate - Ok so didnt end in the most dramatic of circumstances but a massive effort by Jeff to beat Zarate who was 66-2 at the time and capture a world title
That was going to be another one of mine. Kel, how do you know he was injured? A Canadian told you? I know the injury story, and frankly I do believe it because Lucas usually wouldnt capitulate like that otherwise. But so what, thats his problem and shouldnt take away from a great victory. For the record Danny supposedly took a hand injury into that fight which he reaggravated during it, so it works both ways. Not half the fighter?? Disagree... he never had much else besides his toughness and durability which was still there 3 years later when he ate leather all night against an injury free Mikell Kessler. Only 2 years before that fight he put on one of the standout performances of the year and one of best Ko's when he beat Catley. He was robbed against Beyer in his previous fight and before that he clearly outpointed a resurgent Omar Sheika, he actually if anything was in the best form of his career.
He did, great win but not quite on par with what Rose did. Fammy beat him twice at feather but the first one was in oz and a pretty controversial fight
Famechon beat Harada twice, the first time I thought Harada won but the referee which happened to be Willie Pep called the bout a draw but after recounting his score card had Famechon in front by a point. The second fight Famechon won by KO in the 14th round, which was Harada's last fight. I still think Lionel Rose's victory over Harada is better than both of Famechon's.
Yeah mate i may have been a touch hard on Lucas calling him half the fighter he was, but u would agree he wasn't prime when facing Green. Also not Green's fault but Lucas has weathered much more punishment over 12 rds than what Green dished up over half a dozen rds, he had to be injured in my book. Hey Green did exceptional in this fight, all i'm saying is that a Jeff Harding v Andries or a Rose v Harada rate higher. Don't forget the title of your heading before discussing further :good
Agree with that one and would add: 2/ Rose vs Harada - a super performance by a guy considered a 'routine defence' for Harada, going into the fight. 3/ Carrothers vs Toweel - explosive demolition of a world champion (happened a long time ago but the footage says it all)
Harding v Andries I did enjoy Peden v Campbell 2, particularly with Campbells carry on after the first fight.
I read that when Olsen won the world middleweight championship he said something along the lines of how the title should belong to Sands. What a tragedy it is he died so early.
I agree with Rose-Harada but also think that beating Castillo in LA was a great result against the future champ.
