Who, in your opinion, was the oldest fighter (over 40) you can think of who gave a 'great' performance in a late-career bout?
..........Some obvious ones are Duran against Barkley, Holmes against Mercer (though Mercer's own ineptitude helped). I'll try to think of some better ones. Hopkins and Archie Moore would be too obvious.......
...............Frankie Duarte in just about every fight he had in his "second career" after coming out of retirement. He'd been on the shelf for years trying to curb a terrible drug and alcohol problem, and the old warhorse came back better and tougher than ever. Stopped Albert Davila on cuts, stopped streaking prospect Jesus Salud, and was given the shaft they say (I haven't seen the fight) in his lone crack at the 118 pound title against Bernardo Pinango. Easy guy to root for.
The older the better. At least in their 40s. Supply the age. (I have some ideas about who may have been the oldest to register a solid win -but the oldest and the best performance in terms of skill is a tough combination, so I'm looking to see what ESB comes up with...)
Not a bad choice at all. I had it in mind before seeing your post. How about Carl Thompson taking everything Haye had and then stopping him at the very end of his career?
This was better than just " ok ". In my opinion, Foreman's win over Moorer takes the cake as being the very best. .......Of course, I have been known to be an avid Foreman nut - hugger, but that shouldn't change the magnitude of the result......
It would need to be a combination of age and quality of performance. I'll opt for Hopkins' win over Trinidad when he was 36 years old. I doubt any other fighter older has looked as athletic and quick for their respective weight as Hopkins did that night. He was also the underdog and dominated.
The best win no doubt, but I'm not sure about performance. He was getting the **** beaten out of him until he landed that 1-2.
