    Vincent Pettway - Simon Brown

    Ricky Hatton - Kostya Tszyu

(And, although more about excitement than skill: Bert Cooper - Michael Moorer)

I was at the Pettway/Brown fight at Capital Center, April 1995. We had good seats because my buddy worked for Capital Care (Health Insurance).

What a great card that was.

And, what an incredible fight it was. After Brown got dropped early in the fight, I was explaining to my buddy that Brown just got a little careless, and that Pettway was was going to pay dearly for embarrassing him like that. Boy was I wrong. That punch Pettway landed on Brown was incredible. I have never seen anything like it live. Very cool you were there too. I almost didn't mention it because I wasn't sure it was a fight anybody on here would care about. But, being in the arena (which was pretty close to Pettway's hometown if I remember correctly) was electric.

I was so amped about Pettway's performance in that fight, I went to see him fight Terry Norris in Richmond, Virginia about a year later. Unfortunately, Norris fought smartly and outpointed him instead of making it the firefight I had hoped for. Oliver McCall, however, decimated Oleg Maskaev in less than one round on the undercard.

    :rofl

Not so fast as Frankel has explained previously, he has a really big fight film collection and lots of books and magazines a few of which he has even started to read.

You have to admire his persistence. He gets corrected regarding Burt's age and location and he doesn't blink...."Yeah, but still . . ."

 I've always suspect this Burt dude is some weirdo from from the US that lives in his parents basement. To be fair he has a facebook, but that could also be fake.

I ain't stupid enough to believe that garbage from Burt.. Iv'e read all my collection, and am half of Burt's claimed age..

Is it unlawful to have a book and dvd collection?.. or are you just envious?

instead of trying to smoke out potential conspiracies, let's get back to discussing fights we all attended. I think it is pretty cool to find out that a fellow forum member with whom I have never met (Saad) was at the same fight I was back in the 90s. And it left an indelible impression with both of us. It is events like that that caused me to love boxing.

It must be envy. 15000 books and magazines! I bet your lips were tired after reading all of them!

I watched the 2nd round and it doesn't show a knock down, Turpin' knees get buckled but no knockdown. Boxrec also failed to mention a 2nd round knockdown . . .but you are the expert.

I am stupid enough to believe Burt. I look forward to his posts and wish he would write a book!

    Roberto Duran - Davey Moore
Duran was thought to be on the decline by this time. I don't remember if he was the underdog or not, but Moore was the champion and a hometown favorite. The first surprise of that evening was how much of a Duran crowd was in attendance. When they played the national anthems of the USA and Panama, you could barely hear anyone sing the Star Spangled Banner. Quite different with the Panamanian national anthem! As to the fight itself, Duran was in rare form that night. He systematically ground Moore down and when he knocked the beaten Moore into the ropes at the end, the crowd went nuts. Quite an electric evening!

Burt, one question: Having seen Robinson in person, do you feel like he was the best in ring performer or just one of many, resumes aside?

Martinez vs Dzinziruk (Foxwoods, CT,3/12/11) Martinez in his prime.

Kovalev vs Hopkins (Atlantic City, 11/8/14) Shutout of a unified light heavyweight champion, and the mainstream arrival of The Crusher

Golovkin vs Macklin (Foxwoods CT, 4/29/13) A boxing master class on cutting off the ring and the fight ending punch could be heard in every corner of the arena.

Rigondeaux vs Donaire (Radio City Music Hall NY,4/13/13) A dominating performance over a top 5 pfp champion.

Tough question... And not a simple answer

    1. Lyle-Shavers. The way hometown guy Ronnie hung tough and the way Shavers went out of there. Face first and it took a long time to get him on his feet. Crowd was absolutely nuts--more than Tyson fights even. Or Saad Muhammad fights I've been to.

Other big one's tend to be the $$ gambling efforts picked correctly. Those always have a way of making everything terrific, don't they?

Probabably the most influential & got me hooked on the sport as a young kid was Liston--Patterson 1. My dad used to take me to Catskill and see Floyd train and took me to the above fight figuring Patterson to win it. Sure didn't work out that way but being a youngster in such a big event and out of town and just feeling that excitement is still something I can recall to theis day. Highly addictive and I sure didn't think anyone was going to beat that conqueror, Sonny Liston.
