There have been many great performances by fighters beating good/great champions to win the title but far too many of them have excuses like, too old, past prime, weight drained, distractions in camp etc etc.

What are the best performances you`ve seen where the champion is around his prime & on a roll but still lost to the challenger simply because the challenger was the better fighter ?

I`ll nominate a couple of Mexicans to start things off.......

Julio Cesar Chavez vs Edwin Rosario - Lightweight, 1987.
Salvador Sanchez vs Danny Lopez - Featherweight, 1980.

    McCall vs Lewis #1
    Bruno vs McCall
    Toney vs Jirov
Simon Brown vs Terry Norris #1 (depends on how 1 consider's "good")
Marlon Starling vs Mark Breland #1
    Liston vs Patterson #1

    very impressive h2h , but a mismatch :
    Foreman TKO2 Frazier

    borderline :
Aaron Davis vs Mark Breland (Davis was cut and did not destroy Breland right from d start)
Marlon Starling vs Lloyd Honeyghan (29 is not really young especially in this business)
Tomas Molinares vs Marlon Starling (a borderline punch in regards of timing but I think n immediate rematch had 2 happen)

    Haven't watched so far :
Duran vs Leonard #1 (I think i didn't watch it so far)
Shinji Takehara vs Jorge Castro (haven't watched it yet but it seems like Takehara floored Castro)
    Johansson TKO of Patterson

I thought about Douglas vs Tyson but Douglas was floored 1st and longcounted so no , Holyfield vs Bowe #2 was both not really a win and also effected by d paraschute man , Ali had both d criminally intentionally loosened ropes and d heat he utilizied vs Foreman in 1974 in Zaire so another no .
Jones had Toney severely drained in 1994 , Toney could barely stand on his feet less than 2 days prior 2d fight and had 2b held up by his team , and Jones needed that clowning 2 get Toney "floored" and then easily up and uneffected .
Toney had Nunn drained so it doesn't count either .
Leonard had Hearns extremely drained .
Jose Luis Ramirez stopped a good , young Edwin Rosario in their rematch but was floored numerous times and was nearly stopped himself on his way 2 doing so .
Meldrick Taylor used lots of low blows vs Aaron Davis and of course it had its effect .

Ali vs. Foreman. A juggernaut sent into retirement. Extraordinary.

Well I just loved Frazier's performance against Buster Mathis even though the title was vacant. There just something about the "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!" body language after that elephant seal flopped to the canvas. Classic.:good

Alan Minter vs Marvin Hagler for me. I've always considered Minter a fine fighter - if not for Hagler he could have been a good, solid champion for another couple of years, imo. I know he lost to Hamsho & Sibson after the Hagler fight, but I'm not sure those fights would have turned out the same had Minter nnot run into Marv Marv.

As for the actual fight itself, Hagler's performance was as ruthless, vicious, spiteful and punch perfect as one could hope to see from a challenger. 50 fights, 7 years of spleen vented onto Minter...I am priveledged enough to have been there to see it...I'll never forget it either, for a number of reasons...

Monzon taking the crown from Nino Benvenuti. I thought Benvenuti was a very talented fighter. I expected him to have the title for awhile.
