When I was in San Juan last year, I was driving from Condado Beach over to Old San Juan. There was a statue of a boxer named Sixto (Something) on the side of the road. Who the hell was that?
All things considered, Carlos Ortiz. Based purely on talent at their best... Gomez, who was unreal in his prime.
Like most of you say... it's between Ortiz, Benitez and Gomez... when you really think about it... Even Tito as great as he was doesn't even come close to this three which makes you think the quality our island has produced over history.
i think ortiz, benitez, trinidad and gomez were exceptional puerto rican world champions. all-time best puerto rican boxer is close between benitez and gomez but i've gotta give it to wilfredo gomez who is recognized by most boxing historians as the best super bantamweight of all-time. but i also think wilfred benitez might have been the most talented of the two but gomez was more dominant.
He could have been....hung out with the wrong crowd and couldn't shake the " Drug " demons !!!! Before the Chavez fight he disappeared from training camp for a week on a drug binge. Had a lot of potential !!!!
