There is nothing Golovkin has done in his entire career to have me believe he could beat Marvin Hagler.
Hagler missed more punches in his fight v Ray than GG would have, a lot of his punches in that fight looked sluggish, he was coming to the end of his career, GGG has far more left in comparison right now.
That's why it's Pacman over SRL (just) for me too. Manny's done the impossible so many times that I think we all came to expect it. Giving rematches to the toughest opponents is also incredible. His longevity in divisions that he's clearly too small for is why he has F*** all KO's at Welter. If you base the quality of a resume of an opponents resume at the time of fighting......... SRL:- Benitez 38-0-1 Duran 71-1-0 Hearns 32-0-0 Hagler 62-2-2 Total 203-3-3 Pacman:- MAB 57-3-0 JMM 42-2-0 Morales 47-2-0 Hatton 45-1-0 Cotto 34-1-0 Total: 225-9-0 Pretty even. It's a personal preference. Mine is Pac mainly because I didn't think we'd see anyone have a fight-and-beat-all-comers career ever again. Ducking now is so prevalent and it's not just belt holders. It's anyone. GGG was ducked his whole prime. Loma struggles to get opponents and is now a small lightweight. I wouldn't be surprised if Spence Jnr ends up being. Thurman and Bud are both protecting their '0's and Bud's resume is particularly thin.
I understand where you're coming from regarding context. But since the late 70's, there's tons of fighters who've got a better resume than Canelo. It's a big surprise that he's on your list.
The other thing about Pac....who else was as big of an underdog in some of his biggest wins as Manny was? They wouldn't even let Freddie bet on him vs Ledwaba. That was supposed to be Ledwaba's showcase fight- they couldn't even pronounce Pac's name correctly! AGT Barrera was a 4-1 favorite, no worse than top 3 ranked P4P fighter at the time coming off a great string of wins including Hamed, Morales, Kelley, and Tapia. In Pac's first fight at the weight, he went to San Antonio and demolished him. Leonard-Duran I was approximately 2-1 odds on Duran (slightly more than Pac was an underdog vs Oscar) and Sugar was a 3-1 underdog vs Hagler, for comparison. He was a big underdog vs Sasakul, another fight where odds weren't published because the thought was the experienced Thai, coming off a great win vs Arbahakov, would toy with the 19 year old Pacquiao. None of the other guys on that list, and they're fantastic fighters, overcame being an underdog to win by KO in fights that big, that frequently. That's because they weren't in a position to have to take those fights. They had the support and backing to take tougher fights on their own terms. That's no knock, it just is what it is. Manny didn't have that on the way up...the man got thrown to the wolves, only to eat the wolves for dinner instead.
For depth of quality its got to be Lewis whose record is just so stacked and undderrated. Hollyfield, Vitalli, Tyson, Mercer, Tua, Bruno, McCall (granted the fight shouldnt have been allowed to happen), Gollota, Tucker, Briggs, Morisson, Grant, Rahman and Ruddock.
Pre-fight odds aren't really a strong consideration for resume. Mayweather was favored over DLH and Manny wasn't. Mayweather's win was still head and shoulders more important....
