Let's discuss For me it's Apart from Muhammad Ali & Joe Louis It's Larry Holmes George Foreman and Lennox Lewis In that order. thoughts?
Sam Langford: Harry Wills Bill Tate Sam McVey Jim Johnson Joe Jeanette Kid Norfolk Jeff Clark Jack Thompson Gunboat Smith John Lester Johnson Jim Barry Jack O'Brien (Arguably lhw, reported weights were 180 and 170) Bill Lang Stanley Ketchel Jim Flynn Klondike Iron Hague Tony Ross Harry Wills beat a lot of good guys too. If it's just names that matter, it's Johnson, and you could argue him above Louis - Fitzsimmons, Burns, Jeffries, Langford, McVey, Jeanette etc. But that's if it's just names.
It's important when a fighter fights there opponent. A name is just a name although it looks good on paper. Holyfield has a stellar list of names. Holmes Foreman Bowe (3x) Tyson (2x) Lewis (2x) Right there you have arguably 4 top ten heavyweights of all time and he fought some of them multiple times. Jack Sharkey is another one with a remarkable list of names. Joe Louis Jack Dempsey Harry Wills Max Schmeling
In terms of just fought and not necessarily beat, Sharkey may have fought more contender than anybody, at least in terms of ratio. He was mixing it up with top 10-20 guys mere months into his career and never slowed down. All these guys were rated by RING when Sharkey fought them. Rojas Maloney x4 Weinert x2 Renault Solomon x2 Riskox2 Gordman Godfrey Willis Dempsey Heeney Stribling Loughranx2 Schemlingx2 Carnerax2 Walker Levinsky Louis So that's roughly 27(maybe more) of his 53 opponents being contenders. Nevermind, you have quite a few all time greats there in Dempsey, Louis, Schemling, Walker, Loughran, and Willis.
Joe Louis. Only 3 losses and was undefeated in one of the very best heavyweight eras (The Bum of the Month Club).
Ali and Louis are the obvious choices, but Holyfield, Lewis, and Wills are all good shout outs as well.
I wanna say Rocky Marciano too 180 lb undefeated heavyweight is pretty impressive regardless of the competition level
Just a mention for Earnie Shavers: 1) Muhammad Ali (HW Champion) 2) Larry Holmes (2x) (HW Champion) 3) Ken Norton (HW Champion) 4) Jimmy Ellis (HW Champion) 5) Jerry Quarry (Fought for title) 6) Jimmy Young (2x) (Fought for title) 7) Ron Lyle (Fought for title) 8) Randall (Tex) Cobb (Fought for title) 9) Joe Bugner (Fought for title) 10) Vicente Rondon (LHW Champion) 11) Bernardo Mercado 12) Jeff Sims 13) James "Quick" Tillis 14) Roy Williams Pretty good list of champions and contenders of the 1970's/80's. Earnie didn't win them all, but you didn't dare overlook him. How Holmes got off the canvas after that shot still amazes me.

Purely boxreically , Mike Tyson clearly has the best winning record. After him it is a tie between Holmes, Holyfield, Ali and Louis.
