Its funny because I really dont understand that term.

I heard Macho Camacho use it the first time I read it. He said he was going to cut the ring against Ramirez and he spent the entire night boxing from outside. I always said this and not the Rosario fight was the first fight where he used that defensive style he became famous for.

I guess it means not letting the other guy use the ring as much then?

Maybe Macho was high or misspeaking the term — cutting off the ring means the chaser is able to hem in the mover and keep him from going around in circles. Guy moves to his left, the chaser slides over and forward to the right — the other guy cuts back the other way and the chaser advances but toward his left … cutting the distance.

Most effectively, the use of the corners can help the ring-cutter since the angle of the ropes restricts on both sides and you can advance and eventually use those ropes to help you trap him.

Some see Hagler as an aggressive brawler. He was never that during most of his career ( Actually it only happened once, against Hearns, it was the right strategy for that opponent)
He was the consummate counter puncher. He feasted on tough ,strong, hard punching aggressive brawlers, by far the vast majority of his opponents.
But fighters that forced him to lead, and countered him ( Monroe, Watts, Duran, and finally Leonard) had success against him.
Hagler looked like the tough Philly- Jersey middleweights of legend.
The bald head, the scowl, a body that looked like it was carved from marble.
But he wasn't that. He was much more cerebral than most most give him credit for.
And ironically, he could "over think it" against certain opponents. Duran and Leonard are prime examples.
And if the Benitez fight had come off, Benitez probably would've given him fits if they fought right after Benitez's victory over Duran.

Chavez and Duran couldn't cut the ring off on Leonard (2) and Whitaker. Nobody ever cut the ring off on Mayweather... sounds like great movers defy ring cutting every time. So its a failure of the mover and not a triumph of the one cutting the ring...

Absolutely. Marcos Geraldo had a lead on him going into the last three rounds doing the same thing, and Ray Seales got a draw in one of their meetings.

I thought the Sibson fight was maybe the most prototypical Hagler-at-his-best — boxer-puncher who patiently picked his man apart and began bringing the heavier leather as Sibbo got more desperate and thus more aggressive.

I could definitely see Wilfred giving MMH some problems. It’s a shame Marvin wasted an entire year on fighting unqualified Caveman Lee and rematching Fully Obel rather than fighting Benitez.

and he just looks scary too, like a Russian mob boss or something. Like, put him in an Adidas track suit, he could be the final boss of a John Wick or a Taken movie.

Actually... that ain't a bad idea. Write the part for him and it totally works.

Side note: Connor McGregor absolutely killed it in the Road House remake and I suggest everyone watch it for his scenes. Best film debut for a combat sport alum ever. I'm surprised he's returning to the Octagon, would have thought he'd got some more film offers -- he was over the top hilarious, looked great in fight scenes, bulked up and looked scary, etc. He may be a bellend, but man he's got potential in certain types of movies.
