Not who's greater, not who is better. All I ask is your opinion on:

    1. Who had the best single victory at welterweight?
    2. Who had the best single victory at middleweight?
    3. Who had the best single victory that was not in either of these weights?

I had a very interesting discussion about this the other day and I wondered if it might go well as a thread here. So, shoot.

1.Well at welter Leonard's best victory is probably Hearns. Robinson's best victory would likely be gavilan. Even though sugar ray beat Armstrong, he was well past prime.

Comes down to who was better and how they won...Robinson BARELY edged the cuban hawk twice, while leonard came from behind and knocked out Tommy when Hearns was considered a beast. While Gavilian ranks highly as a welter than Hearns, based on quality and type of each victory...

    Edge: Leonard

2.At middle leonard's best is obviously Hagler. Robinson's best is probably LaMotta. Leonard barely edged an aging Hagler, Robinson destroyed a prime LaMotta

    Edge: Robinson

3.Robinson beat the Goddman hell out of lightweight champ Sammy the Clutch Angott at just above the lightweight limit (so sammy could keep his title). Leonard beat up Donny LaLonde at 168/175.

    Edge: Robinson

    1. Who had the best single victory at welterweight?

Robinson defeated arguably the best Welterweight ever excluding himself. Despite it being two close fights (and I will count the title fight in this instance) Robinson still beat him.

Leonard defeated arguably the best H2H Welterweight. He also did it conclusivly with a stoppage. Although Hearns was green at the time and slightly pre-prime and IMO not as great as the Kid, although he may beat him.

    Robinson

    2. Who had the best single victory at middleweight?

Leonard beat the better Middleweight in Hagler, although Hagler was past it and the decision is debateable.

Robinson beat a very good Middleweight champion and beat him good. And also Lamotta was in his prime.

    Robinson

    3. Who had the best single victory that was not in either of these weights?

I'm not sure but for Robinson the Angott win is brilliant

    1. Leonard , Prime Hearns is better than Prime Galivan but it seems Galivan maybe pre prime
    2. Leonard - Hagler is arguably the best MW of all time, Hagler was maybe slightly past prime, not as much as the Leonard haters will tell you, Lamotta/Turpin wasnt as good
    3. Robinson - Angott at 136 practcally makes him the LW Champ, Lalonde is a very good underrated win

I think that's a well overlooked point, PP.

I feel that I must weigh in on this topic

Robinson's welterweight opponents were much more well established

Duran with only 6 welterweight victories and 29 years old

Hearns I'm not really sure what he had done other than beat Cuevas

Edge to Robinson-many more defenses and even on the way up, beats Leonard's to hell. We're talking dozens and dozens, not 2 or 3

160, Leonard's biggest win was Hagler (were there any others?)

Had he tamed Nunn, it would be a feather in his cap obviously and silenced all his critics. I'm just not as impressed seeing him beat relics. A points wins over a badly shot middleweight hardly matters

Even Robinson's pre title experience outdoes Leonard's. Add in Lamotta, Turpin, Basilio, Fullmer, and it's no contest
