A slugger/brawler is a puncher...has power, right? I think that eliminates Greb and Armstrong, who it seems fit the bill as swarmers instead.
Some prototypical sluggers. George Foreman Gerald Mclellan Julian Jackson Nigel Benn Deontay Wilder Earnie Shavers Ron Lyle Max Baer Bob Foster But the most prototypical of them all and the one everybody thinks about when they hear the word slugger has to be George Foreman. I don't think Marciano and Dempsey were pure sluggers.
I was going to say Marciano with the closest second being Dempsey. Best I can tell there's almost no boxer in Marciano. I mean I suppose if you're utter garbage Marciano will jab you out of there, but for the most part he looks much more like the sort to punch when you're punching and bank on his hurting you more than your does his....like the absolute core of a slugger.
I don't know when i think of Marciano he is more of a swarmer than a slugger to me and Jack Dempsey had a lot more dimensions to his game imo but they both belong in that group, i just think the other guys i listed are more prototypical. A slugger is someone who throws every punch with bad intentions, they throw fewer shots than usual due to one punch knockout power, they fully commit to almost every punch and they have that violent and ferocious aura about them, also they don't even care about the scorecards or how many rounds they lose, they just want to get in the ring and beat the **** out of everything what's in front of them.
Not the best by any means but when I think of 'brawlers' the first face that appears in my mind is Rafael Limon's. And just like his face, everything he did in the ring was ugly. But he was the very definition of a brawler.
I wouldn’t include Bonavena. He had to move and box to beat Chuvalo and he took quite a beating from Ellis while in his prime.
