My personal list - 1. Corrie Sanders/Michael Moorer 2. Chris Byrd 3. Sultan Ibragimov 4. Ruslan Chagaev 5. ??? Tony Thompson Have Sanders and Moorer tied at #1. Because whilst I feel Moorer was the more skilled boxer, and his win over Holyfield is great (if not a tiny bit controversial), I can't discount Sanders destroying Wlad and rocking the iron chinned Vitali. So it's definitely debatable. Pretty small list tbh, heavyweight southpaws are pretty rare. Pick apart fellas
I like Moorer and I really think he could have been better than he was. He was a tough guy but at the same time could be very weak mentally. Really psyched himself out at times
the crown/top place would belong to either Corbett and jeffries. mildenburger was probably better than anyone on that list apart from moorer coo.ney is certainly higher up than sanders, though not above moorer.
I'd say Moorer, he beat a better version of Holyfield than Byrd did and won a title on 2 occasions. Then I'd have Byrd, he won a title and beat some good names in Vitali, Golota and Tua. It's amazing how few quality southpaws there were. I guess many good ones were converted to orthodox in older era's. Anyone know any greats who were naturally southpaw but were converted to an orthodox stance?
Mildenberger was not as good as any on that list. Just because you share a ring with Ali, doesn't mean you get 40% better. And ****ey, Corbett and Jeffries were orthodox.
he was german champ, I believe. that's on par with what corrie achieved, at least. although I mean prime corrie not shot2syhte retired one that instantly wiped out prime wlad in seconds. clearly you've learned well my friend, but not deep enough. they started out as southpaws.
Cooper was a 'convertee'. From what I've seen (after blowing off boxing 20 some odd years ago) Byrd looked damn good. Amazing that so many natural 'righties' had booming left hooks. Look no further than the great Patterson guys (OK a bit biased). Big Cat was another rightie that had a solid left hook. I'd always thought Frazier was 'converted'? If that wasn't the case, let me know. J
